It’s about Makonia. You wouldn’t understand.
All of the protests :).
Israel flag. Greek flag. ND flag (current ruling party flag). Macedonia is Greek flag. USA flag. Russian flag(?). A tapestry of different flags and some message that I can’t make out.
There’s a region in Northern Greece called Macedonia, which is where the ancient kingdom of Macedon was located. The ancient seats of the kingdom are located in what is modern day Greece, but of course the actual kingdom itself was much larger than what the modern day borders are with a different population make up, and that’s not even with counting Alexander the Great’s expansions.
The people who live there consider themselves direct ancestors of the Macedons (which is a whole other can of worms). The country of Northern Macedonia which borders the Macedonia prefecture to the north, only recently got its name, in 2019, after years and years of dispute with the Greek government. Before that it was officially called F.Y.R.O.M. (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), but the country itself claimed the name Macedonia, as well as the history and cultural and ethnic heritage of the ancient Macedonian Kingdom. This did not sit well with Greeks because they felt that they were appropriating history that wasn’t theirs, and that while the country is situated in what once was part of the kingdom of Macedon, the slavic population currently living there only settled there many years after the fall of the kingdom, which culturally is definitely a hellenic culture. FYROM itself came about from decades of geopolitical instability in the balkan region, so many people view it as a remnant of a failed state with no legitimate claim to the region’s history, but they claimed it because they had none of their own and no national identity. The debate over the historical claims was mainly an academic one, but it became highly politicised and for years the greek government refused to acknowledge the nation’s name and demanded it’s changed. It didn’t help that North Macedonian governments and academics have been making concentrated efforts to very liberally interpret history to legitimise their claims which are disputed by both Greek and international historians.
Ultimately though the dispute was going nowhere and could very well go on forever. The diplomatic and historical community were more or less the only ones aware of it, for the rest of the world at large, Northern Macedonia had more or less “won” the information war. A person from a far away country who had heard of the ancient macedonian kingdom briefly in school would see that a country situated roughly in the location of the ancient kingdom called itself macedonia and had statues of alexander the great everywhere so that’s probably them, right? For all intents and purposes for the public at large people who wouldn’t bother to look into it would believe the claims. This is different from ancient sites existing in other countries today which are recognised to belong to different cultures, like the remains of ancient greek settlements in modern day Turkey, or Ottoman mosques and structures in modern day Greece. A lot of people honestly asked the question if it really mattered what people think. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what people who won’t bother to study history think, and the naming dispute caused the country many problems, such as blocking their aspirations for EU membership. There’s also the fact that claiming direct genetic heritage to ancient populations, for either side, gets really cloudy real quick considering the numerous population shifts and exchanges in the region over the centuries. Ultimately even if the people living there are slavic, the region really did belong to the Macedonian kingdom. Through UN diplomatic mediation, in 2019, an agreement was reached between them and the Greek government that the country can be named Northern Macedonia, which distinguishes them from the greek region but also basically gives them the Macedon name. Ultimately this was seen as an opportunity for the country to move forward and develop, something they sorely need being a relatively poor ex soviet nation. This however drew large protests in Greece, mainly by people living in Macedonia but also all over the country. Many felt our government betrayed us, that it was malicious outside influence that did it in a concentrated effort to erase greek history or that the then Prime Minister was a puppet. Despite what legitimate academic objections there may be, this movement was mainly spearheaded by far right nationalists, the infamous golden dawn party and other movements. Their motto is “Macedonia is Greek” or that “Macedonia belongs to the Greeks” which is what the banner says. Given the makeup of those protests, it’s really hard to get behind them on the grounds of historical accuracy, because it’s not possible to take their side without also associating with them. Most other greeks simply don’t care that much. They don’t feel a matter like this is really something to get riled over, especially given the state of our own economy and political landscape, and that ultimately Northern Macedonia is not a hostile country that threatens us and helping them move forward is the right thing to do. This of course has not stopped the movement, who continue to hold protests to this day, with this being yet another one of them. I, and many others, cannot in good conscience condone those people and their methods, which are often violent, despite what we may otherwise believe about the matter in an academic and cultural sense.
This whole brick of text is the simplified explanation of an otherwise very complex and long running regional dispute.
He is a mentally ill person who is probably crying for help in this way.
You’ve spotted the work of a greek crybaby nationalist

Some primitive nationalist who is butthurt over the Republic of Macedonia’s renaming to Republic of North Macedonia (cause these people think all countries besides Greece called this country Skopje).
Insane people doing insane things don’t pay any mind to them.
It means that the Macedonian legacy is Greek 🇬🇷🇬🇷💪🏿💪🏿☀️☀️
Frustrated government voter…..
It is a flag with the symbol (the sun) of ancient Macedonia, which is also the symbol of the modern greek region of Macedonia. The person putted this flag up there stating that Macedonia is greek, over a dispute between Greece and northern Macedonia (see the very good explanation of u/PckMan ). So, even if I agree with the statement, which is historically proven, I think it is really wrong that anyone hang political posters on historical monuments. The Greek communist party did a similar thing on the acropolis some months ago. No historical monument or any other such place should become a place for political disputes.
Stupidity at its finest
Just another butthurt far-right nationalist.
He probably thinks we’re still at the pre-elections period of 2019, when the current PM was pushing a complete and aggressive “Macedonia is Greek, we’ll cancel the Prespa treaty” agenda, but as usual since he was elected there was not a single mention of the “issue”.
Vote-hunting at its finest.
