Manchester Metrolink’s future is ‘unclear’ as funding dries up and passenger numbers fall

  1. Need a massive push up and down the country to bring all public transport back into public hands and ran as a service not as a business.

  2. Sounds perfect timing for the tories to tear it down, replace it with whatever their pals want to build on it and tell the bloody peasents to just walk everywhere.

If it’s in the north, it ain’t getting saved because the north isn’t part of the UK thus doesn’t get invested in.

  3. For those who don’t know, this is essentially Manchester’s version of the tube. It’s a huge network which spans the length of greater Manchester in several places and is considered vital infrastructure, especially linking deprived areas to central and giving lots of people a commute to work which would otherwise take a long time. To have it threatened is a massive problem and will cause economic issues for many.

  4. I hear Jacob Rees mogg is certainly not a useless loaded cunt, but he’s good at making efficiencies and seeing opportunities. let’s send our man north of the gap to take a look

  5. About 10 years ago I had to use a 50 minute bus ride from Whitefield to Manchester rather than the 20 minute metrolink to commute.

If you turn up between 7:30am and 8:30am you physically couldn’t get on the tram. They continued to send singles instead of doubles. So you’re setting off 40 minutes earlier than if you drive/bus to stand a chance and you’re already in your car to drive to the parking, what a faff.

Repeat for the return journey if you finish at around 5pm.

The signalling system broke down about once a fortnight and caused delays, 2 months into a new job and I just couldn’t risk it anymore.

They put ticket checkers dressed as security everywhere. They were just there to harass people. Unlike the train companies who let you pay onboard if you were running late they just straight up start trying to fine you.

The bus pass was £15 a week, the tram was something silly like £7.80 a day. I didn’t want to risk the monthly after my experiences but it was 20% cheaper or something.

They need to let metrolink fail and put a free service along that line, replace the signals, let the Manchester businesses pay for it since they benefit the most.
