I do not like the Martin at all but he hits nail on the head, regards SF
"Like Tommy Cooper, it's "just like that!"
An Taoiseach sums up Sinn Féin's housing policy.
"Being realistic, we will build 10,000 homes. But Sinn Féin say they will build 20,000. Just like that! No substance behind it."

I agree fully, however, collectively this sub is rarely in favour of anything negative towards SFIRA
SF seem to think there’s an endless supply of construction workers. There’s an absolute derth of them. And not just lads on site. There’s fuck all engineers, there’s fuck all pm’s there’s fuck all BIM technicians etc. But SF just seem to think the houses will just pop up. There’s not enough people in construction at all in this country. That’s one of the reasons housing is fucked here. Severe labour shortages. I would love to know who SF think will build the houses.
Haven’t they released a strategic housing policy?
I haven’t read it myself, nor do I have any desire to, but maybe the Taoiseach would be better served pointing out the deficiencies in that policy, the specific weaknesses it contains, and showing where the Government’s current housing policy is superior, despite being utterly shambolic.
Otherwise, all he’s doing is making the same tired old glib remarks, that nobody really buys into anymore. Referencing a comedian that’s been dead for about 40 years isn’t particularly witty or ascerbic.
Know who’s opinion I don’t care about regarding policy analysis? Anyone in FG or FF. SF literally couldn’t be worse than them.
100+ years of FGFF, two cheeks of the same arse
Sure Mary Lou says Dublin doesn’t need any more apartments anyway
Another attack on the main opposition .
Real opposition rattles FF FG LAB and the Greens.
It’s the oppositions job to call this brutal government out .
This is the best opposition ever in the house .
They can’t handle actual opposition .
Incredible how this went from 90% upvoted to 57% upvoted in the space of 15 minutes.
What a shit post. I don’t like like but…
I mean….I guess.
But there’s still this issue of the current government being the “opposition” to the opposition party, as opposed to actually leading and governing by example. Their numbers are dropping consistently and instead of trying to fix this, they just keep pointing the finger back at SF.
I doubt SF care about Martin’s opinion here, as it’s not gonna score FF/FG any extra points in the polls
Like an awful lot of their previous pre election claims or post budget complaining sessions, SF make wild claims and then don’t have hard facts or evidence to back up their claims.
Voters: Where will you get the money from lads?
SF: Oh we have the money, we’ll find the money.
Voters: But from where? Will there be increases in taxes?
SF: No, no, there’ll be no increase in any taxes?
Voters: So how the fuck do you plan to finance everything you’ve promised, because the exchequer isn’t exactly flush with spare billions.
SF: Ah now, don’t be asking difficult questions about things you wouldn’t know anything about. Here, have you seen what Leo was up to last week?!
Don’t keep up on Dublin projects, what was the reasoning for SF opposition to the Oscar Traynor site?
Sinn Fein actively want the crisis to continue so they remain popular; it’s as clear as day
And just like that, FFG start to take the housing crisis serious cause they’ve got the shinners throwing dirty in their eyes as they fly ahead in the polls
They are sneaky
It’s all hype to get votes because they know the majority of voters don’t follow politics closely enough to truly understand
Fair play to Martin there for calling them out
But in fairness his party are not without faults either
“The Martin” sounds like a nickname Micheál came up with himself and is really trying to make it a thing.
Craftspeople and tradesmen were totally shafted by both ff led and fg led governments for more than a decade since the bank bailout and then the austerity. Many emigrated many committed suicide and many lost life savings along with companies homes and marriages through stress not to mention the surge in illness.
The only way to solve not just tackle it and let the problem run until the next election is to have cross party solutions.
I’m not a SF voter, but sorry, I can’t bring myself to blame SF for the housing crisis. No matter how hard FFG try and how much you lot seem to push it.
SF don’t have a majority in the Dail, and they have a tiny fraction of councillors. Everytime I look into the so called SF blocking developments allegation, it’s the same story. And all the left wing parties are blocking it. That is selling public land cheap to developers to give a certain amount to be bought back – at more than cost – by the state for social housing. And the rest to be sold off at a price I’d never afford. Often to what used to be called absentee landlords. But you guys seem happy because you get an expensive rental. Wtf?!
It’s all very well saying “be realistic”, “there’s not enough builders”, “it’s too expensive”. Or whatever. But here’s the thing, the figures SF quote are the expected demand as judged by the ESRI. No european country has grown in population as much in the last 30 years, and none will grow as much in the next 30.
Unless those figures are met, then the housing crisis just continues forever. And probably gets worse. Only exception being, all public land is now sold. It’s that simple. It needs drastic solutions. But I don’t believe FFG are capable of doing that. Them and their voter base are unaffected. So they have no urgency. All they have are sound bites like this about how hard the problem is.
And if SF are, as claimed, blocking so many developments, then just change the law. Do it literally tomorrow.
Nail on the head there.
Sin Fein have never been in power. They only know how to obstruct.
I’m not saying what we have is good, but they is worser.
Sinn Féin will eventually be voted in and people will see they’re just as useless as everyone else.
The reality of the situation is SF have a vested interest in continuing the housing crisis since it’s the only thing that has gotten them any support in the last two decades.
They either genuinely think their objections to housing as justified and in line with their “public housing for all” agenda, or they’re using it as a very convenient excuse to continue the housing crisis, and continue to gain support.
If you believe in them, then you agree that nothing should be built unless it perfectly aligns with their ideals.
(which will change week to week depending on who asks and what’s most popular to say in the moment, yes to social housing apartments to those who want them, no to nimbys who don’t, but will always be the opposite of what FFG are doing, conveniently enough)
If you don’t believe in them, then their objections are clearly intentionally trying to prolong the crisis to win over the public.
The sad fact is that none of the parties give a fuck about you and all have their own sick agendas to gain power and money.
SF will say and do anything to get their boys in, to protect their IRA buddies from any criminal persecution, and to push for a United Ireland.
FFG will continue to prop up property developers, investment companies, REITs, Cucoo funds, and their wealthy upperclass dalkey born ilk for their own personal financial gain at taxpayers / workers expense, and the rest will continue to squabble amongst themselves over small nonsense issues, or grandstanding policies that would never be possible but sound great on Twitter.
If you want better governance, get on a plane and don’t look back.
We’ve had fine fail and fine Gail in power the last 100 years they are both the same useless self serving cunts it’s time for change I’ll vote for anyone else
FF will absolutely build 10,000 homes. On public land, which they will give to developers that they know. In return for some rental properties on a different site, at a good rate.
Why does Mary Lou look like she’s playing bingo
The SF housing minister has literally written books on the subject. You can pull them up on policy but to say there is no substance behind it is nonsense.
