Because we have a criminally neglectful government of total sociopaths.
Germany are doing better than us and they made themselves dependent on Russian energy, its a disgrace.
Because Milliband couldn’t eat a bacon sandwich, apparently.
Because 70% of our print press is owned by billionaires, as is the government (regardless of rosette colour)
The population votes for Tories who do nothing or actively make the situation worse…. Then those voters turn around and say “yeah but it’d be worse under X”
The Tory leader could shoot a baby live on TV and the cult voterbase would say “yeah but labour would shoot two”
Because we’re run by disaster capitalists and kleptocapitalist shitstains.
Anyone who talks about energy prices and doesn’t mention insulation is not vaguely serious about fixing the problem.
Loft insulation is actually massively cheap, and massively easy, for most houses.
Nobody in this thread seems to have read the article. Its mostly about insulation and our lack of. No government is preventing anyone from insulating your homes, yet people tend to whine on twitter about the horrible energy prices rather than spend 5 minutes working out where all the heat floods out of their home. The standard of insulation, even among owner occupiers of houses in the UK, is embarrassing. Stop expecting everyone else to fix this relatively easy problem!

The Conservative party are ideologically unable to deal with a crisis like this.
Using the Russian war as an excuse, when in actual fact we only get 3% of our use from there. We also have a general public who are just happy to go with it, would be insane if we just had peaceful but widespread protests
Because of jezza corb
Europe has had stores of gas for a rainy day, we were naive and didn’t develop sufficient storage to weather a crisis
I think it’s too early to tell who’s going to come off worst in Europe, given the winter has not begun.
And even if the UK was only the third worst-off, what does it matter? We’re fucked, knowing some other country is more fucked than us doesn’t help anything.
I’m not saying it’s the tories. But it’s the tories.
Everything they’ve done since 2010 has been a catastrophic disaster and they keep getting elected because they’re also really really good at smear campaigns against their opponents.
I’m far from pleased with how the government has performed (especially over the last couple of years)… but this full leftist, anti Tory sub is just silly. Did anyone actually read the article?
It’s gonna be interesting when labour get in at the next GE (I’m fully expecting that to happen). There will literally be nothing for this sub to moan about. Perhaps apart from vegans blocking the milk aisle.
It’s they way our energy prices are set that isn’t sensible. We are all paying top rate when cheaper sources (wind, solar) are out there.
The article is very badly written. We have big issues in the UK as we are a net importer of energy, we live in a cold climate and have old housing stock, with a lot built badly post war.
We also have politicians from both sides of the fence who have failed to invest in nuclear energy, partly as it takes a long time to build, but mainly as they don’t make informed decisions and focus more on avoiding controversy while in office.
It states that gas is one of the most expensive forms of heat. It isnt, and it certainly wasn’t until the whole of Europe woke up and realised “russia bad” and started buying from the UK’s gas suppliers.
Germany just has a lot of gas storage and bought lots of cheap Russian gas when this all kicked off. Their energy prices will rise next year which is bad news for a manufacturing economy.
Our regulatory system is broken and our government is corrupt and negligent.
Ofgem’s price cap shouldn’t be allowed to exist purely to allow companies still to profit at our expense. Especially during times of crises.
Britain isn’t a dependent on Russian gas. The problem is nearly half of our electricity is generated using gas that we buy on the international market. Further compounded by the energy price being pegged to the most expensive fuel, in this case.
The broken model doesn’t consider nearly all of our energy from renewables.
On energy bills 5% is VAT and 8% is the green levy
Because our government are incompetent idiots
Reason 1: the majority of our electricity is generated by gas.
Reason 2: We have no gas storage facilities.
Reason 3: we do not produce enough of our own gas, we rely on imports.
It’s as simple as that really.
How we got to this point can be blamed on governments of all colours, particularly Tory.
All well and good until your property is ruined by damp..
Because were in the middle of Cost of Greed crisis here in the UK.
Easy answer worst government in Europe
Cmon guys, just buy a 20 quid kettle, job done
Its the price gouging energy cunts that the government has shares in. We’re all being taken for mugs.
Tories don’t run the others
“The last Labour government, the theoretical one under Corbyn we might have had right now, and the next Labour government are to blame.” – The Daily Mail, probably.
It has **absolutely nothing** to do with Brexit and leaving the internal energy market. Nothing to see hear!
