“The Housing Minister just spent five minutes refusing to answer a simple question on @drivetimerte – how many affordable and cost rental homes, of this year’s 4,100 target, have actually been delivered. The answer is 157 – which explains the Minister’s reluctance to answer.”

  1. The housing minister isn’t fit for purpose. He’s an absolute joke. He’s the cooker voting for Christmas. And people trying to buy are the turkeys

Edit-addition: to deviate away from a popular opinion if you ever listen to him he has NO clue at all about the trials and tribulations of the average punter. He (hyperbole:) probably bought his house in malahide for about 80k on one income.
I’m genuinely afraid how the number of private funds and their ilk have snapped up properties under his stewardship.
If he genuinely isn’t aware of what’s going on on that front the he won’t be remembered kindly in the near future.

  2. Hard to tell who he thinks are thicker, the media or the public. He always comes across like he has a blatant disregard for both.

  3. No affordable housing = more profit for institutional landlords lobbying the government. Maybe we should start lobbying 😀

And how many policy makers have personal financial gains at stake ?

  4. Anyone see Broke on rte1 last night? Heartbreaking stuff. These scumbags along with the banks have completely destroyed our country and our future.

  5. Was listening to Norma Foley being interviewed on NT the other day. The amount of time she spent dodging and not answering questions was pretty incredible.

  6. News just in…the lunatics are officially running the asylum!

We”re all completely FU**ED. I voted for the other guy. LOL.

  7. That’s fucking scandalous.

Maybe the target was way too ambitious but at that rate there won’t be 300 delivered by the end of the year.

No one can be that out of touch, surely.

  8. Can’t bear listening to him as it just causes me to be pissed off. Did he actually answer the Q in the end? I find the media often let him just list off numbers without actually challenging him

  9. Couple of points on this that neither Sinn Fein nor Fianna Fail nor Fine Gael nor the Dalai Lama can do anything about :

    1. We exported tens of thousands of skilled tradesmen and women back when the last recession hit .We cant just hit the “on” button again. They aren’t physically on our island any more.
    2. Every mother and father in the country was told to send Johnny and Mary to University for X/Y/Z degree whether they were suited to it or not .We now have 1000’s of disillusioned young people, depressed that they cant get a good job with their Arts degree, when the lad who went plumbing is pulling in 70k+ with more work than they can handle.
    3. Prices of raw materials are extortionate . Up roughly 30-70% based on 2020 prices. I’m trying to build a block wall around a site. I got a quote of 14,000euro last week.

Basically, we cant afford to build houses , and even if we could we haven’t enough people to build them. Nobody can afford to buy the houses that we have already built and anyone trying to rent is fucked because every landlord is either trying to panic sell the house or justify not selling it by charging crazy money in rent.

It’s gonna take 5/10yrs to get out of this mess and no political party in the country will do it any faster. Anyone who tells you they can is lying through their teeth.

  10. There should be probation periods for these guys, and real KPIs – failing this badly in another role would be dismissal on the grounds of inability to perform basic duties. Insane that there’s no accountability for this shit.

  11. Can recall when he became minister, had a real sense of “let’s roll up the sleeves”, “get this sorted”, while speaking, have to give it him he’s a good bullshitter, I’d a bit of hope and all 🤣

  12. The longer I read this subReddit, the more I think the Irish government is more dysfunctional than the US government.

  13. There is no profit for the private sector in these policies.

This is the crux of the issue with the idealogy of FF and FG. If there is no way for the private sector to profit massively via the taxpayer then these schemes are going no were.

How maby housing co ops do we have?
How many have been either started or completed?
    Where is the LDA?
Where is all the building thats supposedly going to happen on state land? All that NAMA land?

Its all been left to the market, to the reits, to all the help to bullshit schemes, the first home scams, the housing for all nonsense. All of these are driven by one word. Neoliberalism.
