While I was traveling Madagascar, in the capitol City of Antananarivo I noticed this rather strange license plate of a car. It first seems so be a diplomatic plate – but whats up with the strange canton sign to the right?
Also researching the web I found that the 586 could be an ordinal number within a mission or organization – in this case – 5XX = WTO (World Trade Organization) which could fit in.
Maybe I‘m wasting my time and it‘s fake.. let‘s find out.
very old temporary vaud plate, think owner says ‘f*ck it i am not changing’ when authorities found it probably take the vehicle
I would say it is a fake license plate which is a mish-mash of different things.
* The 81 would mean it is an export plate from 1981, but it misses the month of validity.
* The Swiss cross looks rather odd.
* The plate is not stamped but printed in a flat plastic sheet.
* It misses the canton letters.

It’s a temporary license plate. Although it seems to be quite old (1981??!). Source: many, amongst others: [Wikipedia](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kontrollschild_(Schweiz)).
Edit: hmm, it’s different though. Does not have a canton on it. But maybe the design was different back then?
It’s a fake. You have multiple hints:
1. The flag on the right doesn’t match any cantonal flag. The green stripe is too narrow to be Vaud.
2. [The red stripe should be entirely red with the years in white and with a black number.](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/1959/1271_1321_1317/fr#annex_2/lvl_d4e144/lvl_B)
3. There isn’t a number after the red stripe. It’s the letter Z in some case.
4. The plate are in a heavier material than the one on the picture.

Import car.
It’s a very old temporary direct import plate. The car is nowhere near as old.
