It will be interesting to see what the EU get the windfall tax % upto ?
Why we wouldn’t just cancel the rich people. Wehm you have a million that’s it , if we can put price cap we can put it on income to.
If this is a windfall on oil & gas I can get behind it.
If this is on energy providers including renewables, taxing the lowest cost providers of energy feels a bit perverse. In past years the problem for europe was that marginal pricing was producing too low a price of energy. Could be a short sighted policy
Based European Commission.
Perhaps EU shouldn’t have closed down so many nuclear power-plants. Or focused so much on importing energy from Russia.
Edit, I can see on the downvotes you thought this was great ideas. Good for you.
Nice, definitely in favour of this. Lots of rising tension lately on this subject, so many member states’ political platform is currently untenable without some strong action on this subject. I was fearing that we’d see another round of the classic neolib answer of privatising and reducing the budget of the public sector to basically subsidize the profits of the energy sector, which would just bite us in the ass a few years from now.
I’m just hoping this will not hurt the long-term investment in green energy, but any investor and company with a >5 year horizon should still be pretty secure in the knowledge that renewables are the future.

UK’s [combined rate of tax (including windfall tax) is at 65%](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cost-of-living-support/energy-profits-levy-factsheet-26-may-2022) on energy firms.
