Paschal Donohoe will have to step down as Finance Minister in December, says Taoiseach Micheál Martin

  1. It’s was agreed in the coalition talks. I’d say Paschal and Michael McGrath will switch jobs and that’ll be that.

  2. Why cant we get like actually educated financial people that spent years in collage, years working in different industries to look after the books. Even health ministers like hire a fucking doctor! The Political system around the world is so corrupt and insider friendly. So Frustrating!

  3. I think Leo needs to put his ego aside and let Michael Martin remain as Taoiseach so Pascal can keep finance and the Eurogroup presidency.

It doesn’t matter which one of them is Taoiseach, but it t certainly matters who is finance minister.

  4. This sort of thing is such a load of shit. Where possible, there should be continuity, and by most accounts Paschal Donohoe has done well in the position.

This just looks like a child screaming “it’s my turn”.

  5. This has more serious implications for Ireland’s reputation in the EU since Paschal won’t be allowed remain on in his role as President of Eurogrop.

That’s Irish party politics in a nutshell

  6. Paschal is one of the very few highly competent people capable of running this portfolio. Huge mistake for optics that is likely to backfire.

  7. I don’t share Paschal’s politics but he is at minimum a competent Finance minister, the most competent we’ve had in years (a low bar however)

Nobody is indispensible yet I’m not convinced FF have the talent to replace him. McGrath might be decent though.

  8. They’re really willing to hurt the country rather than come up with another arrangement that leaves him in his position

  9. I’d bet some in Fine Gael are glad to get him out of there.

Paschal was director of elections for Fine Gael in 2020 and he is blamed for not opening the purse strings in the run-up to that election. He shot down Leo’s, admittedly bad, idea for a 30% tax rate and he is generally seen as too prudent. Hence his nickname, Prudent Paschal.

  10. They’re giving up the only decent minister for finance we’ve had in recent times all for Fianna Fáils ego.

Fianna Fáil is a stupid and ridiculous party full of incompetence.

  11. First we threw a fucking hissyfit over Phil Hogan and lost one of the most influential positions in the EU over a golf game.

Now we’re going to let this stupid Voldemort looking motherfucker replace our minister for finance who happens to chair (and will lose) one of the most influential and revered groups of governmental finance in Europe.

We just love to piss EU influence into the fucking wind.
