UK Funerals planned to take place in seven days are cancelled. Confused Irish sounds, they should be in the ground in three days

  1. why should they take place in 3 days? I mean..that is our tradition – doesn’t mean it should be everyone’s.

Shit..muslims are buried the same or next day.

  2. Post all of the Harold Shipman revelations they extended the time between death and burial in the UK in case of any requests for further investigations into the deceased’s death.

I’ve lived in the UK over a decade, the length of time ways takes me by surprise. The Irish 3 days can be a disadvantage too, as someone living internationally it can make it very hard to get home in time for a funeral.

  3. Varies a huge amount. If an older person dies “slowly”, over a few days, all of the family are already gathered, everyone knows the arrangements etc, it’s sad but not a tragedy and funerals within three days are fine.
A more unexpected death, with travel times involved, post mortems and the like can take longer but having had lots of experience of both the shorter ones are easier for the family in many ways, but everyone’s different.

  4. There was a backlog here in the Liverpool when my father in law died earlier this year. 4 weeks we waited, was very difficult on my husband and his brothers.

  5. My mum was cremated in Canada and her funeral was about a week and a half after she died. Gives people time to travel to wherever they need to.

That said, I do like the Irish way but doesn’t mean everybody will work on that timeframe

  6. Ah seven days is faster than they usually turn them about over there. Some of them being postponed will have already been on ice a bit waiting.

  7. Man… I would be beside myself with anger if a relatives funeral was delayed over this shit. Thats inexcusably intrusive…

  8. I dont think this is true about the cancelations (haven’t seen it anywhere else) but we do wait a long time in the UK for funerals. When my Dad died it was a 3 week wait to bury him. All of my Irish in-laws always comment on how different it is.

For what it’s worth I think you guys have it right, only thing on our end is that when we’ve had to fly over for a funeral our bosses always makes us feel like we are making up that it is all done so quickly 🤦‍♀️

  9. I currently live in England. One colleagues family members funeral was going to be Monday, they were called Friday to say it may not be able to go ahead but heard today that it will. Apparently some have been postponed.

Its always baffled me how long it takes for a funeral over here in general.
When my grandparent died, I asked work could I get a few days off to go home for it and they were shocked when I said I needed to leave the next day.

  10. Ah here.

I’m not a hardcore royalist, but neither am I the sort to go cheering about an old lady’s death. But this is really getting silly at this point.

  11. As a Brit that lives in Kerry I do find it crazy that if I die today I’ll be in the ground within three days in Ireland. How do you guys grieve and mourn in such a short time span?

  12. Lads those Brits are crazy, they have required all UK nationals to kill themselves on September 19th out if respect for the Queen. It’s true.

  13. An English colleague of mine passed away a while ago, shortly after covid restrictions lifted. His funeral was 8 weeks after he died. Backlog for post-mortem was the excuse.

  14. I just imagined he’s saying it’s a big inconvenience for those planning to murder a family member within the next few days

  15. Who would have thought a rando called Marcella could trigger you all so badly.

Did you hear the UK company Diaggeo is also halting Guinness production for a month out of respect?

  16. Italian here. We also bury the dead two to three days after they died. In the meantime between the wake and the funeral if you want to be traditional you keep the body in your house surrounded by flowers for a full blown day.

  17. Wow just the soccer being cancelled was imo outrageous deference to a non democratic institution, as if the rest of the uks lives don’t matter. But if a family member of mine was to be disrespected so much to the extent that they move the day of their funeral then I would become the biggest anti crown cunt there is.
Honestly how dare they enact such a policy
