‘We just want the truth’: British coastal towns fight for answers over mystery sealife deaths | Environment

  1. My dad, an environment agency employee for a decade, has been ranting about the influence of DEFRA on the EA for years and believes they are corrupt. He feels they intentionally prevent the EA from being able to protect our environment properly for political reasons. In his own words: “When we recognise that action needs to be taken, we get kneecapped by DEFRA. It ends with them. We can not operate properly”.

  2. Well between this and the sewage it all feels pretty bleak for our coasts and rivers. All really bloody sad, I wish those with power in these matters would quite literally get their shit together and stop all this fucking with the environment in the name of the economy or private business

  3. So, crabs are dead, but they are happier for it, right?

Seriously, algae blooms can cause massive issues for marine life, which is well known. And algae blooms are usually caused by untreated sewage and fertiliser run-off. They are not a natural phenomenon.

And if you think DEFRA is wrong, which is possible, how about coming up with a cohesive argument for that position? Surely if that region is “all about fishing”, you understand how marine ecosystems work, and you are monitoring what is going on?
