Ellesmere Port dog attack: Five injured after being mauled by off-the-lead Rottweiler

  1. At what point are we going to get stronger restrictions on dogs in this country? It’s ridiculous. The current legislation isn’t fit for purpose.

  2. I’m not a dog owner, but I still like ’em. I’ve met lots of really nice dogs, and avoided some of the big – hard work horrible ones. Top dogs I’ve ever met were a golden retriever and a quality little cavapoo. Why would you have the big scary one and why doesn’t society stop it happening?

  3. As a dog owner myself I believe that dog should be destroyed and the owner banned for life from owning dogs.

  4. This is the first attack I’ve read about involving a Rottweiler in quite a while, do people really consider them a dangerous breed? Looking at the stats only 1 attack in more than ten years, same as Jack Russells. 🤷‍♂️

  5. I love Rottweilers. In fact, I love every dog apart from terriers (personally find them a bit shit, but can respect their tenacity). German shepherds, dobermans, I’d love to have my own big dog.

But as a 5.1” 57kg woman, I will never own one for this reason above – god forbid in the worse case scenario I’d need a dog I could fully restrain or control. As much as I’d love a huge Rottweiler called Muffins, it would be grossly irresponsible for me to own a dog like this. Even a golden retriever would probably over power me.

But not everyone else thinks or cares about this – it needs to be tackled with legislation now. Until then, it’s probably going to be a wee collie or a slinky greyhound for me.

  6. Had a few dogs over the years + pointer, Labrador, terriers and a rottie.
The rotties was like nana when the kids were young and would be protective of them, without being aggressive. He would just stand between them and strangers and look at the stranger until he was told it was okay.
No hassle with other dogs either.

It is true that some breeds are naturally bred to be aggressive, mainly for working like dobermans for example, bit also the same breed can be bred from a more placid line.

Sadly any dog in the wrong hands can be a threat and dog ownership should be treated seriously.
Unfortunately the dogs that tend to attack people are very generally ‘show off’ breeds with individuals that have no interest in training other that the dog supposedly making them look hard.

So some breeds yes are inclined to be more of a threat, but poor training is definitely theain issue.

  7. IMHO, this should be solved by very simple legislation: If your dog is off lead in a public space and attacks anyone, it’s the same as the owner attacking, so should be prosecuted as such.

  8. For those who haven’t read the article. The dog bit people who were trying to grab it after it got off its lead.

All dogs are animals and may act unpredictable to defend themselves if they feel scared at random people trying to grab them.

If the dog is aggressive it is because the owner has not discouraged those behaviours or actively encouraged them. All dogs can be aggressive and bite. Dangerous breeds isn’t a thing, it is purely down to training. You can get beautiful behaved “dangerous dogs” and violent golden retrievers depending on training. Banning dogs isn’t the answer as you get everyone who wants a dangerous dog train the next best breed to do just the same.

Having any dog should require a license if anything, and breeding any animals should be regulated.

  9. May not be applicable in the context of this attack, but how many of these recent dog bites/attacks are from dogs bought as puppies during lockdown and never socialised I wonder? I bet there are a lot of dogs out there with behavioural issues as a result.

As a complete aside, can parents please tell their children to stop stroking dogs they don’t know!! I had to tell a girl off the other day for walking up to my greyhound and stroking his face without asking. Happens too often.

  10. ive been attacked by 3 dogs in my life, if you hurt the dog it will choose a different target.

    heres some tips

offer your arm to the dog, as it bites the arm put it in a head lock and kick the dogs genitals as hard as you can

when the dog bites you, drop your entire body weight on top of the dog

never turn and run, you will lose, you will be bitten and depending on the dog you may die
