Shit, I’m an American young people and I am hoping to emigrate to Ireland for a better quality of life!
Not surprising. It’s 10-15 years ago all over again!
That lecturer from Trinity, Brian Lucey, today accidentally, allegedly, quoting Fascist dictator Mussolini on his Twitter while simultaneously slagging off young people related to this story was incredible. He literally teaches kids that feel so hopeless they have to emigrate.
To me the more interesting age group for this would be 25-30. I strongly considered moving abroad when I was 22/23 (8 years ago) as did most of my colleagues/friends at the time.
18-24 is a time where people are deciding not to go to college/finishing college/in their first job earning poor money and are naturally considering their options abroad.
As they should! They deserve much better

It’s so weird that so many are saying some variation of that. As if it’s some kind of success.
Already done
Doesn’t basically every young person consider moving abroad?
I’ve exactly 7 weeks left before I emigrate.
Am I leaving for this magical wonderland where everything is perfect? No.
Am I leaving for a better quality of life? Absolutely.
Last time we had a recession and no job prospects for pretty much everyone.
This time it’s cause it’s too hard to live in the country which I think is a bit more concerning tbh
I moved to Belfast recently, my full salary back in dublin wouldn’t even pay for a comparable house that I live in at the moment.
Also the UK tax on investments and how pensions are done is so much better than Ireland.
Reading this article literally a week after moving to Ireland is, well, worrying to me. Well guess I’ve got 3 months trial to see what life is like here before I maybe go back to where I’m from.
I’m always amazed by how myopic people are, they really think in this era of globalisation that issues are unique to one country/city. Imagine getting a college education and moving to Canada because of the housing situation in Ireland. LMAO]
Honestly I think a lot of Irish emigration discourse has become preformative; people feel they need to live up to our past history of emigration even though we are one of the most prosperous countries on the planet.
All places are limited by the human imagination and made better by it too. It’s perception that changes when people move away, they start to feel less restricted, for a time anyway and branch outside their comfort zone, make more of an effort, all this makes it seem like the quali of life is better but really they just got into a rut wherever they were beforehand.
I’d say fire ahead, this government is a pile of shite and the next one won’t be any better, get out while you can.
Not suprised to be honest
At 26 I left for Australia. I will never work in Ireland again.
I get paid much more, better weather and own a house and a farm. By coincidence it was just before the GFC struck by I honestly think the mismanagement of government will see the young leave once more.
Does 70pc stand for 70 percent? And if so, when have we stopped using % symbol 🤣
Moved away to America a year ago, although the yanks are crazy, i make a lot better money and my quality of life has improved a lot, i am independent which is what every 20 something year old needs. Won’t stay here forever though
I’m not even that young anymore and I’m considering it
Life is unaffordable
Living abroad for over 6 years. Love going back to Ireland to see family and friends but nothing I have seen would make me want to come back.
Was full steam ahead on a move to Canada. Nowhere will be better than here in the next 10 years so moving west and making a life there.
I work in finance I’m thinking of Malta or the Channel Islands at the moment, nevermind buying a house to rent one would cost half my net salary before bills.
I am an immigrant to this beautiful country. Can’t wait to be a citizen to emigrate again 😭
All of Ireland’s young people who don’t like what’s going on leave. Those people now can’t vote.
I’d be gone if I was younger and had no kids . FG/FF short sighted approach has ruined us again. Imagine a country with working homeless
A tale as old as time
As someone who did it 6 years ago, don’t overthink it – just go. Ireland will always be there for you if it doesn’t work out abroad. It’s sad to see but each year that passes reinforces that I was 100% correct in choosing to go, I had a nice set up in Dublin, walking distance to work (just off of Croke Park) but rent had gone from 400 (2011) to 650 (2016) by the time I was leaving. Had a fairly sound landlord too, he wasn’t doing us dirty just moving in the direction of market price. I imagine the rent is probably multiple times that now. Ireland is no country for young people at the moment.
Ireland is a tiny country so it’s only natural to want to get out and explore. I did it myself and now am in a rather unique situation where I spend half the year in the US and half in Ireland.
Ireland has a cost of living problem but those who say things like “any where is better than here” need their fucking heads examined.
Come to Philadelphia. We’re 25% underpopulated and have several GAA teams.
I moved away when I was 27 and stayed abroad for 3 years in total. Moved back recently and I’m liking Ireland again. Much prefer the community I’m in now, earning more money here and closer to my family that I actually like.
I’d encourage people to go away for a few years, gets it out of your system a bit. You get to see what Ireland actually has to offer and it’s not bad at all.
Already moved, took a lower pay for a better lifestyle
70pc considering emigration is not the same as 70pc emigrating. If you have to Dublin or different city for job then you might as well as move to a different city in EU.
No surprise. Shipping off our youth fixes huge amounts of problems for the government.

Smell ya later Ireland.
I am one of them. I’m 21 currently looking at moving somewhere in the EU. Sweden on top of my list where on average rent in Stockholm is 50% [cheaper](https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Sweden&city1=Stockholm&country2=Ireland&city2=Dublin) than Dublin. It’s not easy moving away to somewhere you do not know anyone but there is little option than that or live with my parents.
