As A citizen, the size of the economy doesn’t bother me as much as quality of life.
It’s illusory if all that money goes on funding billionaires anyway
What does “economic growth” mean to the average guy? Absolutely nothing.
Alternative headline;
Indian GDP per capita now 1/20th of the UK GDP per capita.
Hardly surprising
Was bound to happen eventually considering their population. Good for them
Did we slip or did India just grow?

Boris’ legacy is a strong one
It is worth mentioning that no matter who is in-charge the Indian economy was always going to overtake the UK’s at some point. It was inevitable.
The annual GDP growth rate for the UK (from 1949 to present) is 2.4%, whereas for India it is 6%. Whilst a bit of a reductionist metric is does highlight how unless the UK transformed economy growth to stimulate a higher average it was always going to fall behind India eventually..
These things are going to happen eventually as countries with much bigger populations, catch up with the rest of the developed world.
India’s population is 1.4 billion, the UK is about 65 million – roughly 1/20 that of India. Perhaps that has something to do with the size of the economy.
GDP/capita is what matters really. Absolute GDP growth through population growth makes you worse off.
Being the 5th largest economy was great and all but most of the proceeds of that are owned by a handful of people so it never really benefitted the rest of us proles.
Not read any comments yet. But if Brexit is not mentioned within the first few comments I’ll eat my cat
Due to being run by clowns.
Well, they do have 1.3 billion people more than us.
It has a way to go yet before it hits bottom.
Race to the bottom
A developing country with 1.4 billion people and something like 10% economic growth a year. I am shocked they overtook a developed nation with 5% of the population 😮
I find it funny how the people who shout that the planet is being destroyed are mad because the economy is not growing.
Pick one ?
Brexit, the gift that keeps on giving.
That’s Korma for you
Let’s keep one thing in mind – the UK’s success is measured on their citizens’ wellbeing – not on whether they are doing better than another country.
I thought I’d seen more references to 6th biggest economy this past week.
They previously said 5th biggest when taking digs at the surprise of how shit some people have it here. How long til they have to use 7th?
Well done India.
I think the only reason we’re all here is the NHS and free education.
Hardly a surprise when it will challenge China eventually
The goverment is looting the country on a scale never seen before. What you expect
For the good of humanity, India should have a larger economy than the uk. India has 1/7th of the world population. So if India has a large, prosperous economy that means 1/7th of the world population is living in a large, prosperous economy. Isn’t that good for humanity?
Good for them, we really did them over in the past
CANZUK baby, let’s go!
Surprised it took so long, especially when India has been a superpower since 2020.
It’s much larger geographically, with a larger population and industrial base…why is this news?
Shit, this is my fault. I bought 3 chicken tikka masala’s yesterday.
Presumably they overtook France at roughly the same time. Do all the doom-mongers think that makes France also some god forsaken shithole or is that different because reasons?
So they overtook France too?
Go on Brexit! We can do better, let’s aim to be at least 10th next year…
Good now I never have to read “How can this happen in the worlds 5th biggest economy?” again.
England looted India for 200 years. murdered 35 million people broke India in two, looted $ 45 trillion, And all it took was 75 years to build it all from scratch, 75 years later, their Prime Minister pleads with his people to buy a new kettle to save ten bucks on the electricity bill.
England, such pity.

And we still give them money
