LONDON, Sept 4 (Reuters) – British foreign minister Liz Truss said on Sunday she would set out immediate action to tackle rising energy bills and increase energy supplies if she is, as expected, appointed prime minister this week.
Writing in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper on the eve of the announcement on who will replace Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Truss repeated her pledge to be bold in tackling Britain’s economy, which is struggling with double-digit inflation and is facing recession.
Saying she understood “how challenging the cost of living crisis is for everyone”, Truss wrote that she would take “decisive action to ensure families and businesses can get through this winter and the next”.
“If elected, I plan within the first week of my new administration to set out our immediate action on energy bills and energy supply,” she wrote.
“A fiscal event would follow later this month from my Chancellor, with a broader package of action on the economy.”
She said her approach would be two-fold – immediate action to tackle the cost of living crisis and a plan to deliver economic growth. She would also appoint a Council of Economic Advisers to get “the best ideas” on how to boost the economy.
“We need to take the difficult decisions to ensure we are not in this position every autumn and winter. Sticking plasters and kicking the can down the road will not do. I am ready to take the tough decisions to rebuild our economy,” she wrote.
Truss is widely expected to be named as the new leader of the governing Conservative Party and thus Britain’s new prime minister on Monday, beating her rival, former finance minister Rishi Sunak. Johnson was forced to resign by his own party after a series of scandals.

Burning bridges with our major trading partner, the NHS to the ground, environmental protections, and worker’s rights will most assuredly keep us warm!
The sorry sac kept that vague didn’t she.
In all likelihood it will ammount to some useless inflationary tax cuts which benefit primarily the richest earners, coupled with some nonsense like scrapping the green levy and approving new oil drilling sites. I don’t suspect truss will bring in genuine support unless she’s dragged kicking and screaming.
All BS Tories are fully aware of the impending global financial meltdown
– China is on its arse
– Russia/Ukraine war is years away from resolution
– USA housing crisis
– UK and Europe heading for mass job losses/business closures
Lizz or Rishi will make the situation worse, call a snap election early next year to LOSE the election and try to hand over the shit to Labour
All just my opinion
We should vote Tory and make them fix it
Why would she offer “immediate action”, a “fiscal event” and a think tank? Surely if her action was going to be effective it would be beneficial to the general public, the economy, the conservatives and her leadership campaign to state exactly what her action entails. I have a feeling she doesn’t know herself as it’s not agreed with the BOE or the chancellor.
Shes going to release a plan, no a statement, no an idea, no an idea about an idea, a thought….
All we have to do is wait a week as its a cunning plan that must be kept a secret, in case it isn’t.
If I’m not mistaken, in the first TV debate she made a song and dance about an energy ‘tax cut’.
One of the 2 panel economists pointed out that that would save £150 per annum. Bills could rise to £7000 per annum by one calculation.
This is what we’ll get. Fiddling at the fringes followed by bullshit about about the steps they are taking to help households.
Taxing energy Companies during this national emergency goes against her beliefs. The Mogg called Sunak ‘socialist’ for wanting to do that.
We’re fucked as a country.
At best it’s a useless, off the mark, ill conceived boost that’ll not solve the actual problem.
Or she’s lying. Hard to tell with a Tory these days.
Dangling that last hypothetical carrot to get her across the finish line first.
Remember all of jonnos promises he didn’t keep any she’s just another jelly head in a big pond
Let me guess… she will turn the lights off when leaving her old office…
