Lots of money made available for cycling but our local councils are not spending it. Get on to them ASAP
I like the way public transport and rail are listed separately…
Why is parking in that list?
I would cycle more but it’s too dangerous. I know 5 people from work who have had bad accidents in the past 2 years
We need more multiseat bike options for families and then people will cycle more. Be safer for cyclists as those multiseat ones are wide and must be on the road meaning that cars cant claim to not see them. other cyclists can ride behind them as well without fear
Rickshaws for everyone I say. Hell even them surrey yokes will do.
Electric cars as a solution to any problem are a fallacy. People don’t realise how much resources are spent making them, and how much resources are still required to keep them operational for their lifespan, and how toxic they are once they are no longer serviceable.
A far better solution would be a focus on better mass transport infrastructure, cycling infrastructure, and smarter towns. I don’t mean all this internet-of-things type deal, I mean towns that have been planned by people who don’t sniff markers and eat márla for breakfast.
I see the city folks are mad again because they can’t drive.
Electric cars are an excellent idea for anyone who lives in an area where public transport is not viable, which is a hell of a lot of people throughout the world.
Not everyone lives in a built up urban area where public transport is efficient, reliable and cheap. Hell, many live in urban areas here in Ireland and they don’t even have those things.
Some form of non-public transport is basically always going to be necessary for people who live in low density areas because it just isn’t viable to have public transport going to every single corner of the country.
I would rather see those tiny, city electric cars buzzing around than the pickup trucks and SUVs.
Lol seeing Ireland and Public transport in the same sentence always gives me a laugh.

Cars are great.
Almost total protection from the elements and rowdy members of the public, you have full control of the destination, arrival and departure times, great cargo capacity.
And there’s the taxi option if you don’t want to drive yourself.
Public transport needs to start offering improvements too, and it will never completely replace the car for point to point on demand travel, and that’s ok.
Electric cars are needed in tandem with all of the other modes mentioned. If you don’t live in a town with more than 30,000 people it’s highly likely public transport or bikes won’t solve all of your needs.
Was just up in sandyford industrial estate and saw roads where every street lamp was a car charger. And they were all being used…
Coming back from Melbourne where there’s none it was incredible to see. Honestly fair fucks the electric charger infrastructure is very far ahead in Ireland.
People don’t take out PCP finance loans to buy bus tickets.
(I have no idea how the fuck PCP is supposed to work anyway – it just seems like a weird sort of Ponzi scheme where you never actually own the car you’re just paying off the depreciation on it while you have it, then getting another one. Like, how does the factory get paid for that? Or the bank that pays the factory? Or anything)
Would probably walk into the nearby town on weekends if there was a proper footpath into town and not being at the mercy of traffic on the main road or heavy machinery and those speeding on the backroads.
Why is it that the first tier of personal weather proof covered transport, which is needed in a country like Ireland, is sized for 5 people? We go:
There is a huge jump is size and impact of vehicle if you want to have some weather protection, and this form factor comes from the internal combustion era.
New tech, electric motors and lithium batteries have shown a personal powered vehicle *can be as small as an e-scooter*, something that can be put in a backpack.
The issue is how we legislate, to go from piddly unregulated bike to something weather proof you have to learn to drive, and the only economically viable choice is to buy a full sized car. Things like the Renault Twizy exist, but are treated exactly like a car in terms of parking, lane usage, insurance & cost etc.
Surely in the era of the electric motor & lithium battery, we can fill these niches of single person, two person etc. covered transports with arbitrary form factors, they just need to be incentivized properly. Perhaps single width electric cars (eg. Twizy) have reduced parking costs, or e-bikes without the current restrictive power limits emerge that are suitable for rain.
A bit of innovation legally as well as technically would be nice, e-scooters aren’t even legal under current legislation, I’d like to see more powerful e-bikes and small form factor electric covered vehicles properly legislated for and incentivized appropriately.
Fuck people who think I’m going to give up my own car. Vroom vroom bitches.
I live in rush and it’s impossible to get around safely/reliable without a car. I’m delighted for the green party lads in D4 and anyone else cycling works for but I’m not even in rural Ireland and I wouldn’t be giving up the car.
Bit of investment and planning and let’s see what they got.
If Galway had proper cycling infrastructure I’d cycle everywhere. It’s absolutely shambolic.
What happens to the bus when it disappears though
If you replaced every car on the roads with an electric car, you’d still have endless traffic.
We need LESS cars
I love how easily people who cant drive get pissed off.
Its about the emissions until you bring up electric cars, its just about getting more bike lanes till you point out they dont use them. Always shifting the reason when they could just be honest and admit theyre jealous of those who know how to drive and own cars.
Why would anybody with half a brain repost this irrelevancy here? Oh right, I forgot, this subreddit is a kip as big as Tralee.
Notice how you have more than one thing on the left?
There is no one solution. Electric cars will not be a panacea. But to throw it entirely out because it is not the only answer is a bit of a red herring.
It should be in conjunction with everything on the left. Parking near public transport is listed there – so what do you want parked there at the end of the day? ICE or EV?
Bicycles are great, and they can be parked there too, but I for one have to pack equipment for work that will not physically fit on me on a bicycle. I do however use the tfi bikes when not working.
Rail and public transport can be electric also though.
The comparison between the Irish rail network in 1920 versus 2020 makes me sad. [https://i.redd.it/zyw098wmkd471.jpg](https://i.redd.it/zyw098wmkd471.jpg), look at Donegal for goodness sake, there isn’t a single train line there now. It’s a disgrace, build more train lines, please.
Bring Iarnrod back to Donegal!
Why not regulate cobalt mining so it’s fair and doesn’t involve slavery?
It never ceases to amaze me that people think they’re great because they’re driving ev made with child slave labour.
Rains like 200 days a year. “YoU sHoULd CycLe tO WoRk, DuRrrr.”
This sub really is just full of townies isn’t it?
Gonna be honest, I have no idea how to ride a bike.
Imagine if we actually had public transport that came on time, or cycling infrastructure that didn’t make you shit your pants. That’d be class.
Tell me you live in Dublin or one of the commuter towns to Dublin without telling me.
Cycling isn’t an option. To get a bus I would need to drive 15 mins for a bus that goes just 3 times a day and there is no other bus to go anywhere else near me. Walking isn’t an option because I live in a rural area. I need a car
I live 30 mins from Cork City so it’s not like I live in the back of beyond away from civilisation. I used to live in Dublin and then I moved to kildare. public transport there is a world away from anywhere else in the country (aware that as a capital city vs other European cities its not great)
Edit to add there’s basically no f**king cycle lanes in one of the major cities in Ireland if I did live in the city. Galway is the same
I see your point, but that only stands in areas with public transport or if you’re fairly close to your destination

Its no surprise that a more environmentally friendly(in most [cases](https://medium.com/@maximilian.zoller/ice-vehicles-vs-electric-vehicle-d16eb0d78487) ) version of a popular product gets a lot of attention.

Why is it that the first tier of personal weather proof covered transport, which is needed in a country like Ireland, is sized for 5 people? We go:
– uncovered bicycles & ebikes, 1 person.
– uncovered motorcycle, ~2 people, not for everyone tbh.
– covered car, ~5 people.
