  1. I have a collection of fairy tale books from all around the world (printed in Germany), and all the book covers show artwork that is in some way related to the country of origin for each volume. For example the Greek story book show a composite of ancient Greek art taken from vases, the Swedish one is similar to old woven tapestries from Scania, and the Indian one is something that looks based on block-printed chintz fabric designs.

The design for the Finnish stories has me stumped though, and I couldn’t find anything even remotely similar online. Does anyone have any idea what this artwork could be based on?

  2. Those are distaffs! Carved distaves were a fine gift to give to your sweetheart and you could show off your woodcarving skills. Eastern European, Karelian and Finnish distaffs are known for their intricate carvings.

  3. Did anyone else get the “these rats are in the kitchen , so I got out the rolling pin. Look how pretty these rats are now.” story from their elders?

    No… yeaahhhh,,,, me neither…

  4. This is beautiful and at first I thought they were iced cookies. I have a crazy idea to make iced cookies that look like this….

  5. Oh yeah my grandad has made a few of these! They are pretty straightforward but you gotta be delicate with the carving
