  1. Just putting it out there but: the Mysore model of monarchy’s looking pretty good rn.

Mysore’s a part of the Republic of India and hasn’t had an official monarchy since the Indian government stopped recognising princely titles and granting the princes money and privileges after a constitutional amendment in the 70s.

But the locals remain somewhat fond of the Wadiyar/Wodeyar dynasty who’ve ruled Mysore since the days of the Vijayanagara Empire. They still live in their old palace, and maintain their relevance through artistic and cultural patronage, but have no political power and as aforementioned are no longer recognised or granted any stipend or privilege by the Indian government.

I personally think it could work out pretty well in the UK. Monarchists get to harmlessly keep their posh mascot, republicans get the system of government they want. Win-win.

  2. Apologies if this was asked before, but will restaurants close during the queen’s burial? I know grocery stores and malls are going to be closed but what about other stores? My family’s going to land here for one day and there’s no way we won’t have food 😭😭

  3. Made the mistake of listening to Radio 2 as I was driving back from the gym. Honestly the way callers were talking you’d think they’d lost their own mothers. ‘Hope we can all get through these dark days’ ‘We’re all feeling miserable and grieving now’. It just seems utterly mental. We’d give North Korea a run for its money.

Then a segment about how to break it to a young child that the queen has died if they see you crying – complete with a woman who’d been comforted by her young child who told her that we have ‘a brave king now’ Charles? Brave? The bravest thing he’s done is stick his oar in to stop things being built.

I don’t know about anyone else but I’m not living in a wonderful utopia that’s only marred by the queen popping her diamond encrusted clogs. My weekly shop is up by an eye watering amount and I’m dreading my next set of bills. I’m also worried about other family members being able to cope.

I don’t think our ‘brave king’ will be doing much to help.

  4. Wow, Alistair Bruce talking about her doing her father proud over the last 70 years, as the flight from Edinburgh got ready to take off, really got me 😭

  5. Yes the celebration aspect is shameful. I am in Edinburgh and even the jeering of the proclamation was in bad taste. This is simple pageantry and not Braveheart.

  6. Is it just me or does Liz Truss just keep looking like she’s wandered into a historical event by accident like Forrest Gump?

  7. Is anyone wondering if the Queen’s body is actually in the coffin?

I’m not a conspiracy nut (I don’t think?) but security wise I would have just thought it was not worth the risk of something happening to it while in public?

    Edit – Spelling

  8. I already know this is going to come across as *”old man yells at cloud”* vibes but the amount of people by the side of the road who are sitting there with their phones out to record this is rather depressing.

Rather than live in this unprecedented moment in our lifetimes, let’s have a below average recording where the lighting is going to be out and the lens will probably be covered in rain, where thousands of people who are in the same situation. It’s not unique footage and I can understand the whole *”it shows I was there”* but you can also just verbalise that.

**EDIT:** oh and it’s worth saying, i’m indifferent to the monarchy. It might seem like i’m here in defence of paying respects but it’s more of a general gripe about people these days!

  9. Is the world in a good place now, where bbc news is dedicating all its resources on the logistics of a queue?

  10. Anyone know why the King was wearing an RAF uniform today? All the announcers and news articles were saying he was wearing an Army uniform (as he was in Edinburgh), and even talking about the Field Marshal’s baton (which he wasn’t carrying) but it was fairly clearly an RAF uniform.

I assume that the change was made at short notice and there was no time to update the press releases- but I don’t know why it was made in the first place. Did something happen to the Army uniform?

  11. Never would have thought it’d be Center Parcs making the PR faux pas of the week at this time, but there you go.

  12. You know I regret when anyone passes on but this is becoming a bit of a cult, I mean the news coverage and the actions some people are taking is a real eye opener and tbh it’s scary.

  13. Serious weird question which I haven’t been able to find an answer to: how do they keep the queen’s body cold whilst lying-in-state? Or does embalming postpone decomposition enough for cooling to be unnecessary?

  14. I was randomly watching the bbc live feed around 00:25 and saw some guard just collapse and the video cut

  15. I was highly impressed with the procession from the palace to Westminster hall yesterday. The solemnity and respect was at maximum. It was absolutely magnificent.

  16. We’re watching a moment in history.

Huge sections of the country losing their minds in increasingly creative ways in a display of genuflection that would make Kim Jong-un blush.

  17. Prince Andrew. Is anyone else getting flashbacks to Jimmy Saville?

It’s sickening to see him parading around at all of the events. Just like how “Sir Jim” was still on TV and in society even when everyone knew what he was up to. I thought this was an interesting parallel to be drawn, any thoughts?

  18. I find it very eye opening as to how many British people seemed to have responded to [this NYT article](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/14/world/europe/queen-funeral-costs.html). Which is one of anger and upset and whataboutism directed towards the US.

I think it’s hilarious considering our media does this to literally everyone all the time. I think British society is being exposed for not being some unique shining diamond and it is just as absurd as our media likes to portray “Johnny Foreigner”

If you can’t handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen. In other words you’ve spent god knows how long insulting and taking the piss out of everyone around the world, so expect some of it back now I guess. Respect is a two way street and British people at all levels of society have so little for others on the international scene, ironically something the Queen did far better but unfortunately never permeated down to the rest of society.

  19. My mother, back home in India, is kinda sad at the death of Her Majesty ( her own words ) and says they should pack up & leave. I saw so many Indians ( or, at least South Asian) in BBC live feed to paying respect, and India has officially declared a day for mourning ( last Sunday ).

I almost feels like HMQE-2 transcended even the Royal family. She didn’t rule over India so she doesn’t get the hate the family gets, even Koh-i-noor is overlooked, and people kind of actually like her.

Strange phenomenon. She will be missed. RIP.

  20. I’m all for the government/media giving her all this attention given that she really was an amazing woman, possibly the best king/queen this country has ever had, but I just can’t understand all the people that are queuing night and day just to walk past her coffin. It’s like people are having some sort of mass hysteria, really it’s just mad to take your kids and have them stand in a queue for hours and hours, you can countless examples of these families on the news at midnight for gods sake.

Might make me sound a bit barmy but it makes you think whether maybe they’ve paid some of these people to stand in the queues or whether there’s a huge psyops campaign targeting specific groups on social media because there can’t this many crazies in this country, then again its like any other tourist destination where people just mindlessly queue up so they can take a selfie.
