DfE scheme to lure back physics teachers recruits just 23 in two years

  1. Did they try improving pay and working conditions?

    the website says
    >Here at the Department for Education, we’re taking action to address some of the common issues that teachers face in the classroom. This includes helping schools to:

    > reduce workload(opens in new window)

    > support mental health and wellbeing(opens in new window)

    > enable flexible working(opens in new window)

    > manage behaviour

but that seems to be applicable to all teachers and since things have only gotten worse for them in all those areas I think that its safe to conclude that these goals are being pursued with thoughts&prayers.

But as priority subjects physics teachers will also get an advisor they can speak to…

    ffs.

increase pay, reduce workload and you’ll get recruits. Do the government really think we are stupid enough that we can’t see such an obvious ‘well we tried everything!’ responsibility-avoiding lie?

  2. If you have a physics degree and aren’t already interested in teaching then it’s just another job to you. DfE is competing with the likes of accounting and software firms for these geeks who offer more money, less hours and a far less hostile work environment. Of course this scheme is a flop.

  3. I’m amazed my kid even has an IT teacher tbh. I know him a bit and he does freelance projects on the side, probably earning more from that than his full time teaching job. Being a teacher myself, I understand how rewarding it can be working with kids and youngsters but oh boy, considering a qualified and experienced IT guy with coding skills can make 3x or more in the private sector, I suspect finding teachers for that subject must be getting increasingly hard.

  4. When you outsource your training, as the Tories did in the 80s, then you kick out the foreigners, because xenophobia, can you be surprised that you are short, not just physics teachers but nurses, drs, engineers etc etc. What was a way of saving money, by not spending on training our own, but by poaching people from countries that trained their own for their needs, to have them poached by better pay.
