7. According to tradition Nicholas was a devout Christian and helped the weak and poor financially with the money he had inherited from his family. In fact, he secretly helped his fellow human beings and told the children that he would give them gifts only when they fell asleep.

   One of the families he helped was a merchant who had three daughters. The merchant had lost his wife and all his property, so he was forced to live in a hut with his daughters. As the years passed, he sank into grief, because without money he could not marry his daughters.One night the three girls put their socks on the fireplace to dry their socks and fell asleep. Nikolaos saw from the window that the family was sleeping and threw three bags of gold coins through the chimney, which ended up in the socks.
