I honestly agree; I think it’s always pretty obvious when a tv show or film is British made.
so do non-english language shows on alba or s4c count as British?
Tory Party: “Free Speech on the BBC”
Also Tory Party: “Only shows that are British and promote Britishness”
Seriously. I love British Tele, but that doesn’t mean I think it has to be the only thing around.
They are happy to cut BBC funding though, despite them making plenty of British programmes. They don’t want British shows, they want British shows that promote values they want to promote.
The obvious point is that if you want to celebrate British values, that’s going to be programmes that celebrate immigrants and what they bring to Britain. Which I supsect is not what they intended. My racist grandmother started going on about a Telegraph talking point about how many foreign mothers there are in the UK now. I suspect she wasn’t intending to two of my family members both born to immigrant mothers but dirty racist bigotry doesn’t stop to think, does it. It doesn’t make me more distant from them. It makes me more distant from her.
A show based in Bradford or Birmingham which have high moslem populations, about those folks. Would that be about Britishness?
What the Tories will get is more mrs browns boys and less monkey dust, brass eye peep show or other iconic British shows as we move into the bland middle ground.
