Here in Hervanta I often see these big round garbage bins and often wondered if they belong to the buildings surrounding them or if anyone can use them.
In my apartment block our bins are locked in a separate shelter, and your house key opens the door. So I’m left wondering if those things are municipal or not. They don’t appear in kierratys.info or any of the maps on the Tampere city website, so I’m inclined to think they’re not public, but what if I am around and I have some trash, does anybody mind if I use them?

  1. If the bins are clearly in the yard belonging to the buildings, then it’s safe to assume that they’re to be used only by the habitants of said buildings. Otherwise they could very well be public bins, but then they would probably be listed in some recycling networks’ site.

But anyway, i don’t think anyone should really get their panties in a bunch if you toss some bottom-of-the-pocket trash in there even if you’d not be allowed to use them, just don’t go dumping metric assloads of trash in there.

  2. In general you will not find public general waste bin where you put anything bigger than litter, like trash bag. Many of the Molok underground trash containers has electronic lock that you will not see from outside.

  3. As a person who lived in Hervanta many years, I can say no none of them are public. They may be next to roads and without locks etc but they are all belonging to buildings next to them. You might be fine if you throw your trash once but those people living in the buildings pay money for that and you are increasing their costs, in a way stealing from them. (IIRC they pay per bin load and companies charge extra if the bin is full and there are trash bags around it)

If you need to throw trash for whatever reason go to Duo or the gas station near Walila, they had public containers.
