It’s only been a disaster for refugees, for morals, for hope. It’s been great politically for the government, and has done a great job of training Australians to have less empathy for others.
The difference is those boating to australia are not doing it from France. We either admit france is a hell hole that needs to be invaded and new leadership installed by an international coalition or admit these are not refugees.
Australia has a three pronged asylum seeker policy. 1)Boat turnbacks, 2) Offshore processing in Nauru/PNG, 3) Temporary protection visas when they come to australia. Most people only focus on Nauru/PNG because they want open borders but the reality is it is successful.
The problem is the Labor government didn’t believe in strong borders and over a decade ago started dismantling the system leading to a large increase in arrivals and thousands of people drowning. It took a hell of pain and money by the conservative government to finally destroy the people smuggling industry.
The people stuck in nauru/png are just remnants from the mistake the Labor government made and should be brought to Australia closing the chapter on it….but the current Liberal government doesn’t want to send the wrong signal to the people smugglers.
That doesn’t change the fact that there hasn’t been a successful boat arrival in years and noone drowns in the oceans anymore unlike the fiasco happening in European borders.
