100 years to late.
**They ignored everything for 100 years.**

99 to be exact, because the first measure against the Greek minority was taken right after the republic of Turkey was created in 1923.
>In October 1923 Turkey restricted the civil and political rights of Greeks living there. Banks, civil services of all kinds and categories as well as big multinational companies and enterprises were forced to dismiss all Greeks from their employ.

Dozens of measures have been taken to completely destroy any remnants of the Greeks in Asia Minor, even after the [Greek Genocide](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_genocide) [information in detail here](https://www.greek-genocide.net/) and the subsequent population exchange that aimed to save the ones left from further massacres.

[For anyone that wants to learn more here](https://www.academia.edu/6487178/The_violations_of_the_Treaty_of_Lausanne), a list of every law and action taken by Turkey to destroy the Greek community until 1999, as well as a number of mysterious deaths and disappearances for which no one was ever punished.

I’ll share some of the major ones:

The 1932 parliamentary law which barred Greek citizens living in Turkey from a series of 30 trades and professions from tailoring and carpentry to medicine, law and real estate.
In 1934, Turkey created the Surname Law which forbade certain surnames that contained connotations of foreign cultures, nations, tribes, and religions.

(both of the above, as well as 2 dozen more where taken while Kemal was still in office. **The attempts to destroy the Greek community have been consistent starting from 1923).**

The Wealthy Levy imposed in 1942 which served to reduce the economic potential of Greek businesspeople in Turkey. A law that was later repealed by the Turkish government as unlawful. The government promised to give back the collected taxes to non-Muslims, but it did not.
​

**The largest one, and most widely well known:**
In 6–7 September 1955 an anti-Greek pogrom were orchestrated in Istanbul by the Turkish military’s Tactical Mobilization Group, the seat of Operation Gladio’s Turkish branch; the Counter-Guerrilla. The events were triggered by the news that the Turkish consulate in Thessaloniki, north Greece—the house where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was born in 1881—had been bombed the day before.[36] A bomb planted by a Turkish usher of the consulate, who was later arrested and confessed, incited the events. The Turkish press conveying the news in Turkey was silent about the arrest and instead insinuated that Greeks had set off the bomb. Although the mob did not explicitly call for Greeks to be killed, over a dozen people died during or after the pogrom as a result of beatings and arson. Jews, Armenians and others were also harmed. In addition to commercial targets, the mob clearly targeted property owned or administered by the Greek Orthodox Church. 73 churches and 23 schools were vandalized, burned or destroyed, as were 8 asperses and 3 monasteries.

In 1964 the Turkish prime minister İsmet İnönü unilaterally renounced the Greco-Turkish Treaty of Friendship of 1930 and took actions against the Greek minority that resulted in massive expulsions.
​
They also forcefully closed the Prinkipo Greek Orthodox Orphanage, the Patriarchate’s printing house as well as seizing properties and closing down shops.
​
They even closed the Greek minority schools on the islands of Gökçeada/Imbros and Tenedos/Bozcaada **AGAIN**. The Greek schools where forcefully closed in 1927, and in 1952–3 the Greek Imbriots were permitted to build new ones, closed again in 1964. In Imbros a single school was reopened in 2015, none in Tenedos.

In 1965 the Turkish government established on Imbros an **open** agricultural prison for Turkish mainland **death-row convicts**. They left the prison stealing and raping. [Here is a video of Turkish citizens of Imbros talking about it](https://youtu.be/YcEKztxmVqs?t=224), in 3:45 and 5:45.

**Imbros and Tenedos in particular according to the Lausanne Treaty’s article 14 where provided with the status of local self-administration.**
Instead this was never implemented and measures where taken to force the population to leave. They succeeded, just like in Istanbul where the Greek population from over 100.000 has little over 2.000 today.
In Imbros the Turkish census of 1927 states that the island’s population was exclusively Greek Orthodox and numbered 6,762, there where 6,555 Greeks, and 157 Turks . Now there are about 400 Greeks and over 9.000 Turks leaving there.
In Tenedos in 1927, according to the official Turkish census, there were 2,500 Greeks and 1,247 Turks on the island (while in 1912, when the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople conducted its own census, the population of the island was estimated to be: 5,420 Greeks and 1,200 Turks). By 2000, the official count of ethnic Greeks permanently residing on the island had dropped to 22.

And almost no one was never punished for any of these.
Even the one who planted the bomb in Kemal’s house in Thessaloniki never did any jail time, instead he joined the Turkish MIT (National Intelligence Organization).

And no one did anything for 100 years.
Even the EU and the UN. They did nothing.
Atleast they didn’t get SLAMMED this time

Then why Greek minorities in Turkey still keeps on living in Turkey, because that is not the case for Turkish minorities in Greece.
Greek and Turkish people would not have any problem if that is not the agenda of both of the governments.
Turkish government doesn’t care right now and upcoming elections will feature tons of nationalist rhetoric probably.
