Gotthard Road Tunnel, the longest highway tunnel in the world, opens in September 5, 1980, connecting Göschenen in Uri Canton to Airolo in Ticino Canton, covering 16.9 Km right under the St. Gothard Pass,in the Swiss Alps.

  1. Problem that not many are able to see here is that on a hot summer having your car on for 1 hour or so without moving is a bad thing, unless you have the start/stop or an ev it can do more harm than good

  2. Does this tunnel have multiple lanes? I thought it had, but last time I drove through, there was 1-line two-way traffic. Is construction work going on right now?

  3. does anyone know if there were plans for dual tunnel like all others in Switzerland?
    one “sleeve” for Milan direction and another sleeve the opposite?

  4. As a german I am convinced that at this point the swiss are just building tunnels because they have gotten so damn good at it. Do swiss people just see a mountain and go: “We have to build a tunnel through there”. Still, your tunnels are undeniably impressive.
