Has anyone here had to remove an old gas pipe from their house? Looking for advice.

  1. Edit: If anyone else is wondering, I rang GNI & they were able to tell me that the gas supply is disconnected for years & I need to get a RGI to double check & then cut the pipe.

    Thanks for all the help!

We’ve just bought a new place a couple of weeks ago & while we were gutting the kitchen we found this.

It’s not in use as far as we can tell as the house has oil fired central heating.

Is this something anyone can remove or would we need to talk to Bord Gais etc?

  2. First hack at it with a hammer. Then if that fails an angle grinder or circular saw. Then, in the unlikely eventuality that doesn’t solve the issue I suggest a small amount of explosives, your local quarry will have some you can purchase in cash. Then after that really your only option will be to take off and nuke it from space…

  3. If you need it capped further down and then cut away, a plumber can probably do that if they’re RGI. If you want the whole pipe removed from the house then probably has to be Gas networks.

  4. Contact any registered rgi to do the works , they can remove part or all of the piping back to the meter if required.

  5. I had one in my house got gas networks Ireland to call out and test it, they confirmed it was not live, so it was just buried under concrete. There was no cap on mine so I knew it was an old pipe but just got them out anyway.

  6. My first thought would be that it’s just leftovers- that type of pipe and fitting are very old – way older than any used in the past twenty years so it’s unlikely to still be in use,

Once there’s nothing close that could spark or flame you “could” ever so slightly crack it open and close it again, if it’s live the slightest opening and it will hiss with the obvious smell, also if it is live doing so “should” pop the pressure safety valve further down the line

If it looked new and recently used I’d be looking for a plumber that specialised in gas
