Big five UK energy companies turning away new customers

  1. Our whole energy system is such a weird scam. Most of them aren’t even selling us anything it’s just the same stuff floating around the national grid being “sold” by different companies

  2. Moving in two weeks, am with Bulb. I can easily close the account, but if I want to move them to the new address, there is no easy way, apparently have to chat or call them.
If I want to open Octopus account (who supply the new address) I have to again chat or call them

  3. There are also Equality Act issues with only accepting new customers over the phone, eg deaf and mute customers.

  4. Because they can’t hedge their prices and they won’t take new customers without doing so for their demand

  5. My parents are basically trapped in their energy costs at the moment. They’re stuck paying thousands in standing charges from EDF, but aren’t allowed to switch.

  6. Any new customers they take on would be at a loss due to having to buy additional elec/gas at a higher wholesale cost than the price cap allows then to sell it at.

The examples used in the article are all for people already on the price cap though. Meaning that not being able to switch is only affecting what service you get.

Unless you’re trying to switch to Octopus, you are u likely to see any improvement

  7. How is this not cartel behaviour?

I’m assuming companies are turning away new customers because they don’t want to deal with customer churn, with customers getting better deals elsewhere based on momentary changes in energy prices. All of these “big five” must’ve agreed on this line of defence, wherein they all mutually agreed to not poach each others customers so as to not undercut their profits and *god forbid* give any of their customers better deals.

Switching was regulated into being a thing by ofgem specifically because it increases competition, but now the big 5 are just saying “ye nah, no switching anymore”. What the fuck.

Honestly, it’s a fucking disgrace energy isn’t nationalized. Like pretty much every other privatization of an industry of national interest, it has gone fucking horribly. When it was privatized in the 90’s, real world energy prices were still on the high side. And now we’re actually getting some real aggro, it’s like 10x worse than it needs to be. All because our stiff upper lips refuse to quiver when we get shafted in new an inventive new ways year on year.
