The system stinks. Your boundaries are ignored. You’re the one investigated and treated as a liar. They demand that you hand over the entire contents of your phone, regardless of the relevance to your case. There’s a ton of slut shaming, so if you’re not the “perfect” victim, you’re shit out of luck.
I said I would only speak to a female officer. I had a male in the interview room who refused to leave, even after I broke down in tears. I got told to stop “being hysterical”. They made me go over every aspect of what happened over and over again, with no regard for how it might affect me.
They demanded my phone, but not my attackers. They didn’t search his house for the evidence I said was there. They once interviewed both of us at the same time in the same station. I saw him through the door. That should never, ever have happened.
Reporting it was as traumatic or more than the actual assault. It was horrific. If something similar happened again, there’s no way I’d report it.
We rightly have a high standard to prove guilt in our justice system and sadly in many rape cases it’s simply not possible to meet that standard.
I dunno what the answer is.
Police demanded my phone and password even tho I had never met the guy before in my life, let alone communicated with him. Total fucking stranger. I don’t think the police ever bothered to explain what data they needed. The way the police handled things for me was shockingly bad. I would never go back to them. At the risk of sounding like an edgy teenager, fuck the police. Seriously. Fuck. The. Police.

Thats because no on here thinks rape is ok. We are pointing out the fact everyone should be presumed innocent until proven guilty. That sexual assault is a serious accusation, and needs to be investigated properly. This requires proof, and evidence collection. That may mean going through a claimants phone to look for commutations with the alleged and help build a better basis for a case to prosecute.
Everyone in this thread agrees sexual assault is awful, and should be investigated properly and fully. The system for doing this could certainly be improved, however the system must rely on “innocent, until proven guilty”.
