Calls for tougher fines to stop water companies dumping sewage

  1. Or loan them the money needed to stop them from doing this, followed by hefty fines once the infrastructure is in place. As with leaky pipes across the network, water companies are left like the little boy with his finger in the dyke, trying to stem an impossible flood because they ignored the small holes and allowed them to grow. If we want to solve the problem quickly then give them the money to fix the problem, with a healthy interest rate, and set up an independent regulator with the power to issue mammoth fines for breaches of contract.

  2. The fines need to be a percentage of annual revenue, like is done with GDPR, for example. Currently the companies see the paltry fines as an acceptable cost of doing business.

Of course, prison sentences for the responsible individuals wouldn’t go amiss either.

  3. My weak mop of an MP voted to remove our protections from sewage dumping. Mop would be an improvement actually as he could actually be used to clean shit up.
