What is the oldest coin you happened to stumble upon when given change? I thought that my 1939 1FR is impressive but TIL that there might be coins since 1879 still in circulation today (10 centime)

    * 1CHF from 1921, 1946, 1957, 1958

    * 2CHF from 1912, 1921, 1944

    I also have a bunch of .05 from 1970 and a few .01 from 1980

  4. Let me tally up my wallet finds:

    1500 coins all older than 1959
    At least 200 coins older than 1940
    I‘d say around 20 coins older than 1900

    I‘ve build up a complete 10 and 20 Rappen collection from just pocket finds and gifts from friends

    Also found the elusive 10 Rappen 1879 in my wallet 😀

    oldest 20 Rappen was 1881; gotten as change while buying a delicious roastbeef sandwich from Manor

  6. I recently discovered a .10 CHF coin from 1944 in my wallet. put it aside to keep as soon as I got home. I also have a variety of coins from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Oh and I also got a 0.01 CHF coin from 1977.

  7. The oldest one I got from change is a 1899 10rp. I received it about 15, or even 20 years ago.

    My most precious rare change money was a 5Fr from 1935 made of silver. Worth about 4x the money. Received it just a few months ago.

    I will never give them away, they’re just to precious to me, I’m always checking the change and pick the old ones out and put them in a safe.

  12. I had a 10 cent from 1910. I kept putting it in a self checkout machine in a coop and it kept coming back out and only so did I notice it was from 1910. I’m guessing it was made from a different material composition and it didn’t have the correct weight to be recognized by the machine assuming that’s how they work. Unfortunately I have no idea what I did with it because I don’t have it anymore.

    I have a box with about 20 old (pre 1970) coins. Various decades. But only 10 and 20 Rp. So no silver.

  18. I have 1x 20 Rappen from 1909, 1x 10 Rappen from 1913, 1x 10 Rappen from 1931, 2x 20 Rappen from 1939, 1x 10 Rappen from 1939.

  23. I got 10Rp. As changing money from 1898. I still have it, because I collect old swiss coins.

  32. 1921 2 Fr. I keep it and show it to people abroad. No one believes it is still legal tender AND still buys something…

    The oldest coins I have are:

    1Fr. from 1880

    5ct. from 1884

    I got the 1Fr. as well as various coins from the early 20th century from someone in the family, but I was once given the 5ct. as return money, that was in the last decade but I don’t remember where. It looks rusty so you probably wouldn’t notice at first sight it’s made of grey metal unlike the current golden version.
