  1. No they can get fucked, i work hard to be a sponge on the dole, there isn’t enough money to pay me, the likes of me and the pubs who cant make a profit

  2. I think they should be permitted longer opening hours, earlier and later as a way of “support”. Also, they should get fucking dash guns so you can order a pint of coke for less than a pint of beer.

  3. Why is this subreddit so socialist and yet so willing to blindly support free market theory when it comes to businesses

  4. Of all the things I’d like my taxes to go to keeping failing pubs open is pretty fucking far down my list to be honest.

Maybe if there weren’t any homeless people out there or there weren’t people lying on trolleys in hospital corridors.

  5. We can’t afford to go out because the Vintners Association lobbied the government to bring in minimum alcohol pricing and now we are spending too much on our home drinking……nothing left in the pot…
    Lose lose….

  6. Cost, Drugs & drinking at home are the main issues hitting pubs..

The minimum pricing was a bit of support to try reduce the drinking at home culture..

I imagine the increase in paying with card as opposed to cash has also had a big impact over the last 10-15 years..

Reducing the VAT in line with hospitality rate would be the only support above other businesses i would give them..

  7. No. Given the state of our healthcare system, housing etc I think that money could be spent elsewhere. If there isn’t the demand for pubs then they will have to close the same as any other business

  8. Its not only pubs that will struggle with energy prices.

The problem is that this is a supply issue. Throwing money at this type of problem has historically created bigger issues than it solves.

Supply and demand issues are only fixed by increasing supply or reducing demand.

Depending on how Europe reacts to this crises we could see a sharp increase in inflation.

  9. I’ve read that capitalism, always needs new markets to make more profits.

Legalise cannabis, shut the pubs and just have off licences.

    hahaha. 😀

  10. Not a chance. Any business is a risk. And in fairness, alcohol isn’t exactly a necessity. If people are drinking less that’s a good thing.

  11. Like any other business, if it cannot support itself, close. You won’t see any support put in place for hairdressers, butchers or cafes. Why pubs?

  12. No, I fundamentally disagree with any financial supports for them, let the failing ones fail, there will always be business for pubs so the good ones will survive.

  13. No. They’re no more important than other businesses and far less important than some.

Also the Vintner’s Federation can go fuck themselves. They were already prioritised over covid and got their MUP. Entitled fuckers can go bankrupt.

  14. I think we need a solution that doesn’t involve printing more money, the price of energy should be capped not subsidized energy companies can weather the storm.

  15. Substance abuse centres (pubs) are a very large part of the underbelly of Irish culture, for all of the wrong reasons. If we subsidize them more heavily than we already do, this will only help increase alcoholism and drug use, tearing families apart. In other countries, people go to cafes and restaurants, often with their kids. Seems like a healthier way to socialize.
