Cannabis smokers face losing passports as possession offences plummet

  1. Other countries are moving towards legalisation but we’re looking at tougher punishments. We really are a backwards little island aren’t we.

  2. What’s the justification for taking someone’s passport? Even for a third offence it seems like a completely incongruous punishment which would be a serious breach of their human rights.

Also you’ve got to laugh at the whole situation – arrests and convictions trending downwards, so clearly what’s needed are harsher penalties. It just seems like more culture war nonsense to appeal to suburban boomer Tory voters who aren’t affected positively or negatively by marijuana use.

  3. This is the war on the disabled. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was lobbied by private health companies. Basically if a disabled person cannot afford a private prescription (which is legal) their only way is to use dealers to ease their symptoms.

Imagine being disabled and then having your passport taken away, so you can’t even go to another country for better treatment.

    This is straight up fascist.

  4. This article hasn’t been very well researched at all.

    > It is illegal to smoke cannabis

That’s untrue. It’s illegal to consume cannabis *recreationally*.

  5. Oh the irony!

I have a legal medical prescription for cannabis flower and can travel internationally with it, as long as I have the right paperwork.

So some people might have their passports taken away, while I can use my passport to go on holiday with my cannabis medication. Very topsy-turvy policy.

  6. Mandatory drug and alcohol tests for all politicians.

Unrgently required… As patently obvious they are off their tits most of the time given their policies.

  7. >One of the first acts of Liz Truss’s government was to refuse formal permission to allow Bermuda to enact a law to legalise and regulate cannabis. Bermuda has announced its intention to press ahead with the law change regardless.

The state of it, a majority black island having to ask Lizz fucking Truss for permission to make their own laws, and being denied.

  8. They is so many benefits that Cannabis has to offer for people’s health. I mean they is studies about it.

    & it’s a plant.

  9. Seem fairly unreasonable to me and unrelated to the actual crime.

“You’re being charged for drink driving, we’re taking away your playstation and telling your employer to fire you as punishment”

  10. It’s just dumb as fuck. Also disgusting as fuck when you consider that certain people need it for chronic pain relief.

Even just taking away people’s cannabis is totally pointless if we look at what happens if laws are toughened.

    1. Police wasted time and money confiscating it, writing it up etc.
    2. Person who has the cannabis taken by the police will just buy it again on the black market.
    3. Person who has their cannabis taken by the police, now is far less likely to ever cooperate with the police again or be helpful in anyway.

Then add in taking away passports and driving licences, if such dumbass scheme ever came about, then their chances of obtaining (or holding existing jobs) is decreased.

There would be no benefit at all, to anyone.

And of course we all know what the reaction would be of those worthless cunts that support such draconian laws, if it were suggested that alcohol (which is an order of magnitude more harmful to indiviuals) be made illegal.

  11. In reality they don’t give a shit about the well-being of others, its about protecting the highly lucrative medical cannabis sector, else they’d do more about alcohol.

  12. I went to jail for growing my own cannabis 7 years ago and served 2 years in bullingdon! I had cropped and was in the process of curing/ageing it like a fine whiskey… due to my great skills they gave me a harsh sentence…. I could of got 3 years at maximum for the category i fell under. Either way with British law if you plead guilty at first opportunity you get 1/3rd wiped and then only serve 1/2 the time actually in jail. Also if you behave you get released on tag 6months prior to your release, but still have to do probation for a year!! Cannabis producers are usually skilled cultivators and could grow anything anywhere, even in space, the techniques that you learn from tending your plants are invaluable life skills to surviving in todays world (being self sufficient) you have to be very innovative to keep it hidden too.
I have now left my country for Thailand 🇹🇭 taking my skill set with me, I have been working with 2 university’s in the industry and recently it all got legalised for medicinal purpose. I’m studying to do my masters and become a Dr. My knowledge came from hard work and research that my country imprisoned me for…. But here they want me to continue my work, to provide opportunities for others to learn from me as well as continuing my research benefiting those who need it.
Great Britain is not so great, it’s only got worse with each new leader blaming the last, governments borrowing money that can’t be paid back for generations! We have become nothing but followers to a system that traps you with debt and the people with less are the ones who will suffer. It’s new age slavery, so called criminals like myself would be trapped in a country that doesn’t support you or acknowledge anything that you do to try contribute to society. Plus cannabis smokers aren’t harmful the worst they do is get deep, get munchies and sleep well, instead of taking their passports why not do something about pedophile’s and rapist’s as I’m pretty certain they get F***all time to what they should in jail… what about there passports? If I was a leader of a country these people wouldn’t get in!!! But they care to take the liberty of someone who thinks creatively, enjoys food and has profound thought. It makes me angry 😡

  13. So, you are allowed to seriously injure someone and keep your passport. However, you dare to smoke a plant and you lose your passport.

    Wtf.

  14. Britain is really in the dark ages with this stuff.

    Get with the times.

Drug awareness classes, pfff. It’s not even addictive. 1985 USA called and wants its drug policy back, please.

They should do something about the drinking culture here, it’s out of control, grownup boasting how pissed they got last night, yes that was cool when you were in uni, mate..

  15. Ok so as a British expat living abroad where i have a wife and family. If i smoke weed in the UK and get caught, they can take my passport off me, does that also mean i lose my wife and family as i cant travel to go back home without use of passport? Rendering me homeless without my family without a means of getting back to where my life actually exists??

  16. Haha jokes on them, I don’t have a passport!

Nah but seriously it’s messed up. We gotta legalise as soon as possible and help bring the economy back to life and watch drunken violence fall off a cliff (hopefully).

  17. I’ve smoked cannabis for around 15 years now. The worst thing I’ve ever done when I’m stoned is put the sugar in the fridge…

Now ask someone what’s the worst thing they’ve done when they’re drunk..

    Fucking madness.

  18. This is such a ridiculous rule. Are we children?

Adults should be allowed to take any substance they like. If it is produced by a reputable, legal manufacturer, and sold by licenced outlets by trained professionals, then people will not only be safer, but imagine the tax income, and also the reduced constraints on policing for controlling the illegal drug trade all the way through to petty crime.

I’ve been doing research into psilocybin (not professionally, but mainly documentaries, etc, and not taking it), and it feels to me like a miracle drug that can help with all manner of mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety.

What does tighter controls actually mean in practice? It doesn’t stop people taking these drugs, it just drives the trade further underground, and also makes a potential environment for a pressure chamber for more nasty crime rates.

And people say the liberals are the ones that are bad? Well, I tell you something, the conservatives who support this sort of thing are making things pretty dire.

  19. You can snort lines of coke in the House of Commons and become a minister, but you get your passport taken away for having pot? Have I got that right?

  20. I’m a cop and i think it needs legalising and taxing.
But with licensing conditions to keep criminals out of the profit and people messing with electric.

I do also think it should only be within dwellings.

Whilst I like the smell some people would hate the smell from there neighbour’s.

The Police waste loads of resources on it.

  21. Britain: We are open to the world!

Also Britain: We will cripple our own citizens from travelling anywhere for minor offenses.
