It’s been years since I went picking hazelnuts. The childhood memories come flooding back.

  1. For anyone who hasnt these are miles better than the shop ones, they are almost creamy when fresh and the flavour is stronger.

  2. We’ve got quite a few on our farm used as paddock dividers. Wife and I were trying to figure out what to do with them all (including the hawthorn berries, blackberries, elderberries, etc). Should prolly go and round up a few and have a go at them see how they taste.

  3. Local fruit and veg shop told me that hazelnuts are really difficult to source as Ferrero buy up most of them for their products (mostly Nutella).

  4. I do it every year with my dad since I was young. I don’t like them myself, but I can get at ones that he can’t. Unfortunately I was useless this year due to injury.

  5. Well this gave me a concers flashback!! That was the life. Oh then potato guns. Then Goldeneye. Now I’m sad thanks.

  6. Aren’t these just “conquers”? Only good for putting a string through and seeing whos is harder?

Think i have questions now about myself.

  7. Hazelnut trees are tricksters though and produce a lot of fake nuts as decoys. Float them in water to find out how many viable ones you have. Fake ones float and viable ones sink.

  8. Only conkers around here 💔 very jealous of you! I do however have these knarly ancient apple trees in the garden, and the neighbour has brambles, and another has sloes, so autumn is still full of foraging/picking/baking/fermenting fun!

  9. Just to add to your way of consuming, kick my ass on haul. You can turn them into pesto. Whatever grinder/mixer/chopper you use and scallions, oil and salt. Lovely. Mixer again, oil and salt, you have nut butter you can roast the nuts in both for extra flavour. Hazelnut butter on toast is unreal.

  10. What a haul! I was delighted I found a few in the forest recently. We used to do a trip with the father as kids and come back with similar hauls. They taste amazing.
