How do Swedes feel/what do you think about the US military presence in the country?

  1. I’m very supportive in general.

US military presence in Sweden isn’t new. We’ve been partners for decades, and we’ve had numerous joint exercises.

  2. My grandma who is to my knowledge not a fan of boats thinks the US ship is cool and said she would like to walk around in it.

  3. I don’t mind. Sweden may not be part of NATO, but we cooperate very closely with them. Let’s have a few American aircraft carriers or whatever, it’s no biggie.

  4. I’m indifferent. Like some have previously said, we’ve been close allies for decades and these joint exercises aren’t anything new.

  5. A huge group of US soldiers arrived to Sweden and landed in my town. I guess they had a few hours to kill because they were all walking around the city centre. They didn’t have their uniforms on so i was super confused about the Americans literary everywhere seemingly out of nowhere and i couldn’t place them in a group at first, they didn’t look like tourists or students (the usual demographic). I had to ask a smaller group who they were and then it made sense.

They were SO friendly! They told me that they were here for a large exercise with Sweden, Norway, Finland, and UK. They asked questions about the town and culture, my clothes (sami), and one of the women played with my 1,5y/o a while and showed me photos of her 1,5y/o back home.

    They are welcome back!

  6. I dare say the general opinion if there is “one” is that we don’t like war. And US gone to war many times in modern times, and not once that the general public agreed with here in Sweden. Futile, selfish, destructive wars mostly catering to the millitary complex staying relevant in the economy (last part maybe more me than general opinion)

However, with russians flexing their muscles it’s the lesser evil by far, from a purely selfish point of view but also from an objective view.

So in short the sight of an US hangar ship makes me happy, if you asked me 5 years ago I’d say that today I wouldn’t have believed it.

  7. A visiting friendly and soon allied military, what’s the problem?

Should we actually feel anything about it, it’s normal.

  8. I dont mind as long they behave.

Lived in Japan a while and once in a while it pop-up news about american marines starting brawls and a few cases of rape around their base in Okinawa.
