  6. I agree with the defence hike but we should be pumping even more into a green energy revolution. Borrow a shit load if we have to, but green energy investment should be a priority. There’s another solution… windfall tax on the profits of fossil fuel companies.

  14. Whoever wrote this doesn’t have a clue about defence spending and there statement about HMS Prince of Wales proves that. I agree with hiking defence spending the main reason it’s the highest hike since WW2 is because since WW2 it’s almost always been constantly cut.

    But we still need to fight climate change and secure energy security.

    I hate how articles put two unrelated issues together like you can’t agree with both.

If the Government won’t intervene in things like investment, training etc, then no one else will. That’s why we have a low productivity, third world economy compared to other countries. A turd is still a turd. You can look to the gold, velvet and pageantry of Monarchy and see it as representing the UK. The reality is empty shops, derelict factories, collapsing imports, devaluing currency, ignorance and stupidity.

  22. The reference to Iraq, Afghan and Libya is a moot point. These were regime changing, unconventional wars. The threats from China and Russia are conventional and sophisticated with large volumes of military hardware that need to be matched. There is an argument that the peace since the end of the Cold War has left European countries and their citizens complacent and their militaries underinvested, whilst diverting budgets to state welfare and quality of living etc. a luxury that perhaps cannot be afforded. Therefor this would not be a one off increase in defence spending, more a return to a status quo of spending that provides a credible deterrence to protect sovereignty and way of life.

  28. I mean… we shouldn’t be ignoring either. It’s obvious to anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together that more needs to be done on tackling climate change and its effects.

    However, our military is also woefully understaffed and underfunded. Learn the lesson of history this nation has failed to on so many occasions – it’s a very poor idea to have a tiny, budget stricken armed forces compared to our power projection potential when approaching times which are clearly getting more and more unstable. Plus, guess what – the military and associated industries can be a part of the approach to climate change – especially seeing as for an island nation, climate change is a national security matter.

  29. TBF given Russia’s assault on Ukraine preparing for a future conflict in Europe and potentially the pacific is pretty much a given, thats not her fault its the world we live in, have a chat with Putin and Xi if you’re truly concerned about it.

    That doesn’t mean climate change has to be ignored mind you. Two issues dont block each other exclusively (pretty sure civilian carbon emissions far outweigh military).

    The UK could be one big empty field and it wouldn’t put a dent into the climate change argument and carbon emission stats. When China, India, Russia and US start bringing theirs down to some level, maybe then we can look at the UK.

  37. Climate change is a UK Security issue. Too ignore it is to ignore a major threat.

    The climate crisis will create mass migration events, which will have a destabilising effect on most parts of the world.

    In a decade or more the daily fail readers of the world will remember with us fond memories when the number of refugees crossing the channel was below a mere thousand.

    Obviously there are hundreds of other (better) reasons to combat the climate crisis, but in the scope of defence and security, this will be a big one.
