Ireland would have to assess whether to take in fleeing Russians, says Taoiseach

  1. Don’t do it.

Each Russian refugee has another smaller refugee inside the refugee, and another smaller one inside that one, and so on.

    It’s too many.

  2. Finland’s stance is that Russian citizens are responsible for their governments actions. So they are being restricted from entering Finland.

Martin says we’re taking in Ukranians and so Russians should also be considered. The glarin difference is the war is taking place in Ukraine not Russia.

  3. Eh no we’re struggling as it is with Ukrainians who are actually fleeing a warzobe not to mention all the military aged men chancers fleeing countries that don’t have a war but clogging up the system.

  4. Aside form any moral argument, if there is a build up of a concentration of ethnic russians in Ireland, knowing Russia they would probably claim that area of Ireland as part of its own territory. Thats how they operate.

Letting russians in would be a big mistake.

  5. Tricky one IMO, having some Russian friends who strongly oppose Putin I can’t see how we can really hold Russians who don’t support the regime responsible in any way. They live in an authoritarian state that will have no problem with killing you if it has to.

I can understand not wanting to accept them, but I think the stance of a country like Finland is not morally justifiable.

It’s like saying we blame North Koreans for their plight and therefore we would return every defector.

  6. Putin would use the opportunity to plant agitators among the Russians arriving in any country allowing them in. There would be cars waving Z flags up and down the M50 as well as harassment of Ukrainian refugees. Provocation and propaganda, that’s all that would come of it.

Most Russians support the war in Ukraine. I can’t believe this is even being considered. by gov. They should be kept out.

  7. Of course we’ll take them! We have the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that we didn’t give to the Ukrainian’s!

  8. Under no circumstances. Russians in EU have protested in favour of their lunatic attack on Ukraine and civilization. They are a fifth column throughout Eastern Europe. End all Russian visas now.

  9. All the lads have to do is land here and claim asylum, they don’t need a special programme set up like the Ukrainians, and there’s fuck all the government would do to stop it.

  10. Nope we should not. Most fleeing are trying to dodge being called up. I’d say the last thing we need is AWOL Russian reservists

  11. It’s a but of a tough one, on the one hand conscription is one of those things that gives you a very strong claim to asylum. On the other hand, we’ve already had pro-war demonstrations from the existing Russian population here.

Pretty much a lose/lose situation to be fair.

  12. So, we can’t house people who have successfully escaped the war and now he’ll consider if we’ll take in the Russians?
Let’s not forget the thousands from other countries that arrive everyday for other politically unstable countries. Let’s add the fact that indigenous people of Ireland and those already who live and work here either can’t find homes or are living in fear that they’ll be homeless.

  13. Yes, because they are victims just as much as Ukrainians are. It shouldn’t have to be said, but not all Russians are pro-Putin morons.

  14. I have an idea! Why don’t we ship all the pesky Irish people to Australia and then we have tons of space for cheap labour Ukrainians and Russians. I’m sure employers would love that.

  15. While I sympathise with the innocent Russians caught up in all of this I don’t think they should be allowed into Europe. If they can see what their people and country are doing wrong, then it’s their duty to resist.

  16. I think they should be allowed in, to me it seems quite hypocritical to say we shouldn’t allow them in because they are complicit with their nation, but that russia is a dictatorship

  17. Im all for saving them if this government figures a sustainable way to build more housing quicker to accommodate ppl going through the rent crisis, homelessness the, Ukrainians, the refugees etc
    Fecking joke this has become..

  18. According to EU law, those who escape a war that violates international law have a right to asylum and protection. In this sense, Ireland and Europe must now organize the admission of the people who vote with their feet against the Russian war of aggression. It’s something that we hadn’t planned on but have to deal with. They first have to get out of Russia and into a EU country.

  19. Sure, that will make the Ukrianians who fled genocide feel very welcome here. Importing they very men that have been conducting the genocide.

These guys fleeing could be pro-war, pro-Putin, we have no idea. They are only leaving because they don’t want to fight, not because they don’t believe in it.

They didn’t leave before, they obviously didn’t protest the war as they would be in prison already, so at the very least they are ambivalent about the war in Ukraine, and at worst they are supportive. The war isn’t unpopular in Russia, they just don’t want to go there themselves. Better let the poor do that for them.

  20. I say no. The IPAS contracts (available to read online) are vague enough that Russians would end up being housed with Ukrainians and that would be a potential clusterfuck. I know from first hand experience that they have enough trouble getting on with themselves & us sometimes.

  21. I have no issue with Russian people living in Ireland but I don’t think they should be given accommodation by the government.

  22. While I do believe that a small cohert of the people feeling support the war, I generally belive most are probably against it and realitivly normal people.

Some comments saying “why didnt they leave earlier”. It’s tough to pack up and leave your life even when you do not agree with politics. But if your life is about to
be taken away via conscription then its definitely a motivator to leave quickly

Taking Russians could also mean less people to fight ukraine which is a bonus. The trick is what sort of visa do you offer a Russian fleeing and what support do you give them when they land as I can imagine they’d not mix well with other Ukrainians in emergency accommodation.

If we were to take in Russians, what facilities should we offer them? Are they to blame for what their government started?

Am definitely in the mood for seeing the good in people tonight I will say.

Also that top comment made me choke on my spit 🤣

  23. We shouldnt have taken in any one we have house crisis and homless problem take care of them before taken in any one

  24. Whatever happens, online discourse regarding Russians is getting out of hand.

After 9/11 it took a long time for the heat on Muslims to die down and for most people to settle with the sensible view that not all Muslims support terrorist actions.

Do we have to go through this again to get to the point where we can state the obvious; that this war does not belong to every Russian.

This is Putin’s war, and yes he has supporters. Fuck them all, but can we get past the dehumanisation of 140 million people please?
