It’s really grim how this housing crisis is affecting students.
One spent last year homeless and likely this one too. Another has been asking churches if they can sleep there.
And all through this the Housing Minister told the student union he is too busy to meet with them.
If only UCD had any land they could develope
Occupy Collages and Universities, no one sleeps in them buildings at night, may as well make use of them !
So many articles in 2016-2018 of objections to building more student accommodation. Chickens home to roost springs to mind . Shitshow of a country.

Look at all these politicians objecting to student accommodation.
What party was objecting to the “studentification” of an area?
It was an emergency 10 years ago, now it’s a housing disaster
The fact that some student rentals are charging up to €1000 in **Limerick** is just beyond crazy. There really is no excuse beyond greed.
It’s odd though – in Cork for comparison, almost every major residential development in progress in the city is student accommodation (Lancaster Gate is the only exception I can think of).
There have been huge numbers of non-student apartments approved, but only the student apartments are actually getting built. Why? Density. The only things getting built are the developments that pack the most in and get the best return – offices, hotels and student apartments.
Obviously there are other issues too though – it’s entirely possible that lower income non-students are increasingly looking to rent what were previously student houses, and landlords would likely jump at the chance to get a higher return. And it’d be interesting to know how the student numbers compare with previous years. Are the universities enrolling greater numbers of students, for which there isn’t enough housing?
The best way to get attention is of a few dozen students set up a tent city in the park in merrion square.
It wont be long until media see it.
Imagine the international media photos and video of a tent city across the road from the irish parlaiment.
To be honest colleges themselves are part of the problem. They should have been campaigning and building student housing instead of spending millions on fancy new lecture buildings. Ya I’m looking at you NUIG. You take people’s tuition money and not give a flying fuck where they are going to sleep. Shit behaviour. Another example of colleges acting like a business. Well you won’t have much business for much longer when people can’t find a place to stay.
When I started in UCD, in 2009, the campus accommodation was priced from €3,808 (€423/month) to €5,324 (€591/month) per college year (9 months).
Currently, campus accommodation is priced from €8,059 (€895/month) to €12,275 (€1,364/month) per college year.
Absolute robbery by UCD! The students are completely right to be fuming!!
They should be blaming thr University for taking on more students than the area can house.
I’m in denmark rn and they have tons of container flats for refugees (like little villages of shipping container style houses) and honestly theyre super nice, why cant we install a ton of them and then longer term they can become student accommodation? They literally had them popping up all around the city, in green spaces between buildings etc and no one complains.
As if the government gives a flying fuck.. this has been ongoing for ages with no end in sight but dont worry when it comes to election time they’ll pull a fucking rabbit out of their hat to ”fix the issue”
Sigh, added it to the list.
