Idea of monarchy as symbol of duty or sacrifice ‘a lie’, says Labour’s Clive Lewis | Clive Lewis

  1. Very few ‘dissenting’ voices in the past week.

It’s almost as if there’s a layer of unelected bureaucracy determining what can and can’t be said.

  2. He’s spot on. It’s an admin position and if you think wheeling an old woman in front of recent victims of a natural disaster shows that she’s empathetic and kind whilst doing a civic duty then you’re clearly the sort of person who’d be entertained by someone jingling their keys at you.

  3. Could we get someone to do their job at a lowe cost I bet we could, could we elect someone to do the job Yeo we could, if they turned out to be a sweaty noice could we sack them yes we could.
    Sounds like a win win

  4. What really grinds my gears is the fact the all industrial action was called off for the Queen’s death. That shows how crooked the unions are. The monarchy is there to remind everyone that this country has a stratified society and it is gonna remain like that. Well done, you shot yourself in the foot again.

  5. The juxtaposition of The King not paying Inheritance Tax and the Public having to foot the bill for Royal pomp and ceremony while parts of this country are struggling to pay for basics like gas and electricity is NOT on.

  6. This whole shitshow over her death is beyond pathetic, the infatuation the country has with the monarchy is sickening

  7. Whilst I agree with the point, Labour also isn’t the working person’s party anymore. They’ve just shifted to an anti tories stance.

  8. The current system we have is no good, but if it’s made more like a presidential position we’ll have all the useless politicians wanting to do it to line their own pockets again.

Can you imagine Johnson, Truss, Farage, Mogg etc etc in the job. The public deserve better.

But as it stands right now, you may as well replace the current set of elites with a massive stinking sack of shit and put a sparkly crown on it or call it president.

  9. Ok Clive.

Unfortunately MPs (including him) have showered themselves in shit over recent decades and people would rather respect the institution of a woman in a nice hat.

  10. Yeah, I’m sure its amazing being in the royal family / close to the crown, though I bet no one actually wants to wear the crown, far longer in the spotlight than your peers.

  11. lol

Nobody imagined how entertaining it would be watching the extremists digesting all this

GreenAndPleasant is giving me proper belly laughs at the moment

  12. I find it bizarre how anyone can claim that living I incredible luxury at the expense of working people is considered a sacrifice. Or how socialising and going on taxpayer funded jaunts around the world is a duty..

  13. Do people think being a royal is a “sacrifice” what exactly are they sacrificing? They inherently have some of the most prominent positions in the world from birth, they don’t need to work their way up to do anything.

Literally everything in their life is handed to them on a gold platter.

    They ain’t sacrificing shit.

    They live an easy life.

  14. Of course being a royal is a sacrifice, do you think the queen ever had the absolute pleasure of steak Tuesdays with a pint in a Weatherspoons or buying a swanky new outfit in primark? And I bet she’s never felt the extreme joy of having to go fill up the leccy when it runs out? Bless their souls 😢

  15. Bloke is entitled to his opinion, my opinion is he is talking out his arse

Feel free to agree or disagree, doesn’t bother me

  16. Imagine if there was no prime minister and instead it was the Queen/King that debated in parliament on various legislation. They would suddenly be just as unpopular as most politicans are today. It was very smart for the royals to separate themselves from politics in this way. All the glory and none of the risk & pressure in needing to address real issues.

  17. Said it before and I’ll say it again: Clive Lewis imo is the perfect Labour leader for our times. Clearly a committed lefty, but it’d be funny to see him ratioing gobshite Tory media stooges with “oh I’m an un-British traitor for being left of Gordon Brown, am I? And just how many times have you been shot at or had to shoot others for Queen and country, Ms Kuenssberg (or whoever else)?”

Attlee proves that a patriotic socialist who has fought for their nation is a vote-winner.

  18. Other than the fact that his party leader has asked Labour MPs not to make any public comment other than tributes to the Queen in the mourning period, I don’t have any problem with this. I don’t agree with Lewis on this, but I think it’s dangerous not to allow republicans a voice

  19. If we had a referendum, the public would overwhelmingly support keeping the monarchy
What might be more pallitable would be to reform it
Take some of those royals on the periphery off the civil pay list and generally make some cuts to the wealth and properties

  20. Meanwhile, he probably considers his party a symbol of duty and sacrifice, of course. And the people are those who will be sacrificed for the benefit of the rich.

  21. I know millionaires that would never go to poor and desperate places were working royals should go and talk to thousands especially in horrible moments after tragedies. They would cash their inheritances and live like the Sussexes.

  22. I’ve honestly felt like I was living in an alternate reality the last week, these people are being treated as god’s and us “subjects” given the privilege of shaking their hands or queuing for hours to visit the queen in a box…. theres people choosing between heating and eating… this has displayed how backwards some of our views are in this country

  23. The only good thing about our monarchy is that they provide stability to our democracy.

We could never be a full on authoratarian dictatorship, because the armed forces swear fealty to the monarchy and not the government. We can go further and further right wing, but at the end of the day we know that we can never cross that line, no matter how faded it becomes.

  24. I’ve had this conversation a lot so I won’t go too much into detail but I fully disagree.

If you’re in the Royal Family then a lot of your life is simply being constrained by duty whether or not Clive Lewis believes it to be the case or not. **You’re scrutinized much more than any celebrity and any incident no matter how** ***minor*** **(looks at Andrew) has implications for the whole family and even the country to some extent.**

Even if you try to escape, you struggle to do so. Just by virtue of birth your life has been mired by this plague.

NOW, do they live in luxury? Yes. But it’s rather limiting. They can’t go and build rockets or start big companies like other billionaires, their purchases can’t negatively impact the institution. Not to mention your entire life is simply do this, be here, do that, sign this, meet this person, eat lunch with this person.

For me personally, I just want to relax. 16 hour shifts, 7 days a week…Fuck that.

  25. LMFAO the fakeness of Labour could not even wait till Funeral.

Expose them Clive <3 Show Labour are against the monarchy and against Britain.
