Why does Maghery have the worst air in Europe?

  1. As far as I can tell on this website, it’s the worst air quality globally outside of this one mine in Zambia. Maghery beats Beijing, Mumbai, Delhi, etc etc as having the worst air quality.

  2. It seems to vary wildly based on the time of day. I checked myself and it seems to go from 15-30 (basically the norm for the country) to 400-600 at varying times in the day (the bad air quality seems to be from 4pm to 6am which is even weirder as you’d expect most pollution etc to happen during and around work hours). I’d imagine it’d have to be an error or something very local to the measurement device is affecting the results. I can’t think of any reason why it’d be so much worse than nearby measurements otherwise.

  3. what parameter is causing it? i remember seeing something around limerick with extremely high ozone levels causing a high AQI but never looked into what it was

  4. If it’s people’s own air quality sensor then it could be foggy at the time. The sensor is optical and vapour registers too

  5. It might be beside the exhaust for something that switches on in the evenings, like someone’s hot water boiler or something like that.

  6. It’s just a malfunctioning or poorly situated station. [They pretty much let any rando with an air quality sensor setup provide their data](https://aqicn.org/data-feed/), so there’s bound to be some inaccurate results from time to time.

  7. I’d put money on it that it’s turf burning, either in their own or neighbours house. I would say it’s far more likely to be the neighbour too, as someone who sets up an air quality station probably doesn’t burn turf
