Hey,

I am planning to buy an iphone using Tax Free in Noway but struggling to find out the actual refund rate.

https://upon.io/vat/countries/norway here you can find the rates which says 11-15% for purchases less than 10,000. How do I find out the precise rate?

  1. Be aware that buying “Tax Free”^(1) have a number of cavaets attached – for starters, it’s not an option for residents of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

Furthermore, goods must be exported in unused condition within 30 days of purchase. This means that if there is more than 30 days before you leave, or if you plan to use the iPhone before leaving… well, tough; no refund for you.

The shops offering “tax free” shopping should have a sticker in the window. Online shops often offer it too, if you contact them and explains that you’re buying for “utførsel”. You’ll find refund points at various exit points from Norway, such as airports, ferry terminals and near some border crossings to Sweden.

You should be refunded the VAT, minus fees.

^(1) and by tax free, they mean VAT refunded.

  2. If there is Global Blue, or other same type tax free provider, than the return starts at about 12%. For an iPhone I assume you should get around 15% back from a tax amount. That is 30 days validation and you can do that in any airport, in some borders (better to google for locations).

  3. The VAT rate for electronic devices is 25%, which means that 20% of the total price you pay for a product is VAT. This is what you can get back, but you probably need to pay some of that money as a fee to some company that arranges the tax free purchase for you.

I managed to find a price list from [vatfree.com](https://vatfree.com) who provide this service. [https://traveller.vatfree.com/faq/embed/StT64eax49SXqB23a/What-is-your-service-fee-#faq_StT64eax49SXqB23a](https://traveller.vatfree.com/faq/embed/StT64eax49SXqB23a/What-is-your-service-fee-#faq_StT64eax49SXqB23a) They take 30% of the refunded VAT, which means that you would get back 14% of the purchase price which you paid at the store. Other providers of this service may have different prices, and it seems like some of them are not open about their prices on their webpage.
