  1. So after a renovation of 11 years, one of our finest art museum opens once again. Joy all around!! Finally we can go see the Flemish primitives again. Gape at a Rubens. The museum is already being compared to ‘het Rijksmuseum” and the “Louvre”.

The VRT is having a field day with it, having the “documentary” of “[a night in the museum](https://www.vrt.be/vrtnu/a-z/een-nacht-in-het-museum/)” filmed there with different guests. I can only recommend you go watch the first episode.

However, this new opening can also be used to start an interesting debate. The comparison of KMSKA to the Rijksmuseum can only go so far. Why? Because the KMSKA only gets €8mil subsidies, whilst the Rijksmuseum already gets €30mil. This can also be seen in the expected amount of visitors. The Rijksmuseum expects 10 times as many people to come visit, compared to the KMSKA.

This then begs the question, people always say we should find culture less, should we not fund our big musea a lot more? Are musea not important to our society?

We see for example the Kingly musea in Brussels are not the best or most renovated buildings or collections, compared to our neighbouring countries which have in general better musea and give more money to them.
