I have no issue with the Taoiseach flying business class to speak at the U.N
It was an important and useful speech as well. Not all temporary members of the Council do that.
I fucking hate the man but…He’s the head of our government! It was a commercial flight already. No, he shouldn’t have to sit in economy with the rest of us.
There are better sticks to beat FFG with than this, please use them.
Now I’m off to vomit because I defended Mehole
Anyone that thinks our head of government should be flying in economy when on business is a gowl, pure and simple.
This is as stupid as attacking Mary Lou for flying first class to Oz and New York. They are working!
A private jet would be another story, but business class on a business trip?! Ffs
I don’t think anybody does. Like he’s an important person and flying economy would be embarrassing for our country.
No private jets tho
If we made him fly economy, we might aswell rename ireland to “Cavan”
Majority of world leaders would fly private. Hard for me to say but this actually makes him look good in comparison.
People who deride politicians taking business class flights are missing the point. Anyone who flys for business knows the difference is massive in terms of restfulness, alertness and being ready to work. If you take a commercial flight you will arrive absolutely knackered and it takes a day to get ready to work. This is coming from someone who has never flown business but I regularly work with international colleagues.
If it was a 2-3 hour flight you would have a legit gripe but for trans Altantic I would rather our head of government be performing at his best… especially for an international audience. To be honest I am suprised the Taoiseach isnt using the government jet.
Why the hell is anyone giving out about the leader of a country flying business class. He was going over for work, him and his team are pretty important. Seems like a hatchet job piece for no reason.
Take away your dislike for whoever is holding the position. This is the head of a Government, travelling to a global conference, to speak in front of other world delegates. Business class, no issue with it.
I’m relatively low level at my company. If/when we travel transatlantic..it’s ALWAYS business class because we’re a)expected to be rested for when we arrive in order to work/get the best out of meetings and b) expected to be rested on the way back in order to recover from working etc.
He’s the fucking Taoiseach. It’s not like when he arrives in NY he’s going to be off to squeeze in a visit to the Statue of Liberty before shopping till he drops on 5th avenue before having a sbarro for dinner in Time Square.
He’ll be working, then flying back to continue making a hames of the country.
No begrudgery here for him flying business
The government deserves criticism for its various failures, but there’s a point where you criticise everything so much that you eventually get people to have sympathy for the government because the criticisms become ludicrous.
Like everyone else, I’m counting down the days (82) until this mendacious little hobbit slithers back into the undergrowth, but this is a perfectly legitimate use of business class travel. He’s the head of the government going on a business trip.
I certainly hope no wife or offspring was brought along for a jolly at our expense, though.
There are issues, plenty of them, but this really isn’t one of them. There would be people giving out if he was sent by DHL in a budget shipping container. He’s got to be able to get to places and have flexibility and security. There are serious practical issues with flying a head of government around in economy.
They might be better off focusing on the areas where the government is actually floundering and failing to deliver and those are mostly housing and healthcare.
I’m reserving my judgement on their energy crisis and cost of living measures until I see the budget next week, but what I’m reading in the leaks, kite flying and rumours aren’t really giving me much hope. It looks like rearranging the deck chairs stuff.
“Mr Martin was responding to questions from reporters about department guidelines which state ministers and officials must fly economy where the flight is less than seven hours.”
Which dickhead introduced that and was it Eamonn Ryan?
I flew the same flight recently enough for a work trip and business class is definitely needed if you plan on doing any work prep on the flight. It’s probably a small minority of people who have an issue with it and make the most noise. Most people truly don’t care.
Theres nothing wrong with the head of state flying business class.
What a non-story.
I sometimes wish we had blunter politicians. No of course the leader of the country shouldn’t be down in economy, and stop asking stupid questions.
Why is this even news? Other world leaders have an entourage of cars and private planes (I mean look at Air Force One ffs), I think it actually looks better for him to take business class, instead of private jets. It makes him look more official, less like we’re a shanty town without adding more to our carbon footprint.
I’ve seen Leo fly economy on Aer Lingus from Switzerland. No joke.
That said he and the other minister he was with did spring for the extra legroom, cheeky bastards.
