Lovely, but would’ve liked more details on the background
I love his paintings! My Norwegian grandmother had a print of one of his wedding paintings hanging in her house.
Very cool! Had never heard of this artist.
Noe this is art.
The norwegian national romantic art era is amazing!
Is it that amazing though? I mean the artistry is fine but the level of rendition is mastered much better by plenty of other painters. So what is left is the image he portrays which is an absolute construction and bares no root in the real Norway. At a time where nationalism in Europe in general was on the rise, imagined communities were being constructed all over Europe. In Norway in particular the recent danish union and the swedish union made it almost a necessity to find the “untouched Norway” or “Norwegian culture” that differed from our neighbours. Deep down in the peasant culture painters, historians, fairy tail collectors, language collectors, musicians, sought to find some lost parts of Norwegian culture. But all they did was construct something that was never a shared culture, or just a very local tradition and mirrored it to the society as if it was something true beyond time for all Norwegians. As Norway’s struggled to get rid of the swedish union this was fitting. But all it is, is a misrepresentation, it’s a construction and a lie. Nationalism when it’s political in nature and rooted in our democratic institutions can be somewhat docile and benign, but when cultural it’s hostile and excluding.
I like this picture, i like the colours. But to like the picture because it makes you romantically connected to Norway is just intellectually poor.
How’d he die so young?
Hvor er dette fra i Norge?
