I like the idea, but I hope a trust based system works on two sides as well.
Employees shouldn’t abuse this for a “meh don’t feel like it day” whilst employers should not instill a culture of “if you don’t need a doctor, you are not ill”.
My workplace just doesn’t really care. Need a sick day? Just drop a message, no questions asked, no care for doctors note.
Long term illness ofcourse need some doc’s note, but if you feel unproductive just don’t force yourself.
The thing is, most people don’t take advantage of this type of system (in the abuse sense), and the mental well being improves for all. Surprisingly most people are quite honest, and good people, and we should design systems for the well being of the majority instead of punishing everyone for the few abusers (that get found out fast anyhow).
In the UK you can self-certify for up to 5 days (full working week) for ilness. It’s a much better system imho. All you have to do is fill in a form afterwards saying “I was off from x to y date, had abc symptoms” and sign it.
This caused a consireable amount of ire to my manager at the time who was based in Belgium and couldn’t wrap his head around it. He went to HR in the UK who basically told him the same thing I did. He also tried to guilt me into coming back into work when I had a really bad cold (to the point where my direct colleagues told me to just go home). The day after I called in sick again.
Dit lijkt mij een gevolg van Covid 19: vroeger was het not done om niet te komen omwille van een ‘verkoudheid’, nu is het not done om te komen met een ‘verkoudheid’.
Knettergek zijn ze.
It’s a good thing they have finally made plans for this. There is really a need for a change in our workplaces, when will people finally be paid for what they have actually done instead of how many hours a person has worked.
Truth be told, there are weeks where I could get my job done in half the time. Being productive doesn’t necessarily mean being at your desk.
Can you take sickdays for psychological reasons?
I thought the sick note was not obligated by some law, it is only the employer that demands that sick note because they don’t trust their employees. Hence why some employers mentioned in others posts are free to give sick days to their people without demanding such a note. So what exactly are they going to change here? They’re going to put into law that employers no longer can ask for a doctor’s note for a sick leave of two or three days?
Looking forward to it.
Someone said civil servants already have this. If he/she is talking about federal civil servants, this is wrong: we can take two non-consecutive days per year (“snipperdag”). Yeah, more than other people I guess.
If I go to the doctor (I never take such a “snipperdag”), I have to:
1) call/mail my boss I’ll be taking the day off because of illness.
2) call in Medex (the company responsible for hunting down sick civil servants)
These steps need to happen before 9AM.
3) Get to the doctor (so let’s hope he/she has a free spot that day).
4) If you get a day off, annoy the crap out of them by asking them to fill in a special form because Medex doesn’t take a regular doctor’s note.
5) Immediately send the note by snail mail to Medex (do take a picture so that if bpost loses the envelop you can still proof you had a note).
6) Depending on how many days you got: contact your boss/Medex to say how many days you’ll stay home.
So basically: for one day, just try to make as many people sick because all those steps above are not worth it if it’s just for a day.
If they drop the note “absenteeism” will rise, but mental health will rise as well plus I think that after some time absenteeism will drop because then people will stay at home when ill, instead of showing up for work.
For those who fear people taking an advantage: a good boss knows who is taking advantage.
Then again, a good boss is very rare hence all those micromanagers.
The Netherlands is mentioned in the article as a place where this works. What the article forgets to mention is that a lot of campanies in the Netherlands use a “arbodienst”. In short they let you feel miserable because you are sick.
Hey Doc, i feel depressed because of work: standaart 2 weeks… Hey Doc, i feel shit i must have eaten a spoiled durum: standaart 2 days.
The certificat de maladie is an administrative rompslomp and is totaly ridicule. If you tell your doctor you are sick he will cover you. Hé can’t mesure how much sick you feel. People who are abusing the system are not stoppés by this.

This is already the case for public servants. It’s great.
Voka in shambles
I hope this makes it, it’s really ridiculous to have to go to the doctor when you have a cold or flu, they can’t give you anything anyway.
The [poll on HLN](https://www.hln.be/nieuws/regering-mikt-ziektebriefje-in-vuilnisbak-besparing-van-tientallen-miljoenen-euros~a2663f17/) really surprises me
