Simple googling didn’t help to find a reason for a flag today. Anyone knows?

  1. I just googled “half raised flag finland” and got the answer right from the first result. Don’t know how you google stuff…

  2. It is called “Suruliputus” and as people have said it propably means that somebody in your apartment building died.

Also ~fun~ fact, it actually half lowered flag, as they raise it to the top and then lower it to the middle

  3. It most likely means that someone who lives in the building has died. Edit: it was a surprise to me (a Brit) when I moved to Finland to discover that most (if not all) apartment blocks have a flagpole for flag days and things like this.

  4. It’s the day someone in the building died, or the day after if it was too late in the day to do it yesterday. Another option is that it’s the day of the funeral, in which case the flag is raised back up for the remainder of the day after the burial has taken place.

I think the death of former president Mauno Koivisto was the last time the whole country had flags at half pole.

  5. Flag on half post is called “Suruliputus” Which roughly translates to “sorrow flagging”

This is done when someone someone in the house / apartment complex passes away.

  6. Just for info/edu, the flag here is set too low. During the mourning flag presentation, the flag is first raised full-mast, paused for a respecting moment (determined by whoever is raising the flag) and then lowered so that the top of the flag is at two-thirds of the pole height. The bottom of the flag should then be about half-mast, if all rules, concerning the size of flag and height of pole are followed. So here it is shown a half of flag height too low. BTW, the laws about the use of national flag are very specific in Finland.

  7. in finland they raise a flag for our national day and for every commemoration day for some famous finnish person or thing f.ex. Kalevala day 28.2. In this case when the flag is raised only half way it signifies that someone in the building has died. The flag is only raised on that building’s flagpole.
