Hi everyone,

I have searched the web, including reddit threads, frenetically for some guidance on my employment- and relocation situation and hope anyone here might have any pointers.

**My background and situation**

I am a EU and UK citizen (dual citizenship) living in the UK and have accepted a job offer in Berlin with an official start date at the end of this year. I will however not be able to relocate until 2 months after the start date. I will continue to reside in the UK and travel to Berlin when/if needed during this interim period using my EU citizenship, and then move to Berlin and become a full-time resident. The employer is OK with this.

I have tried to understand my options in regards to obtaining tax id and registering via Anmeldung but I am a bit lost on how to move forward with this.

If I have understood correctly, the ideal step by step is to first do Anmeldung and then request a tax id number which can be provided to the employer. But obtaining a tax id number is not strictly required, with the caveat that I will be placed in a higher tax bracket until I have obtained and provided one. It is also not necessary to have done the Anmeldung to get a tax id, as one can fill out a form and request one via Finanzamt following the instructions mentioned here: [https://allaboutberlin.com/guides/german-tax-id-steuernummer#the-tax-id](https://allaboutberlin.com/guides/german-tax-id-steuernummer#the-tax-id) *(“****If you can’t register your address****, fill* [*this form*](https://allaboutberlin.com/out/taxid-form) *and mail it to* [*your local Finanzamt*](https://service.berlin.de/standorte/finanzaemter/) *with a copy of your passport. You will get your tax ID by post 2 to 4 weeks later”).*

My problem is that I will not have an address in Berlin for 2 months despite being employed in the country (i.e. before my relocation has taken place). I found a reddit post where someone was in a similar situation ([https://www.reddit.com/r/germany/comments/s7n5eh/untangling\_anmeldung\_and\_getting\_a\_tax\_id/](https://www.reddit.com/r/germany/comments/s7n5eh/untangling_anmeldung_and_getting_a_tax_id/)). In the post, they noted that they found “*\[…\] a form* *(010250 Antrag auf Vergabe einer steuerlichen Identifikationsnummer für nicht meldepflichtige Personen durch das Finanzamt) that seems to allow EU citizens withotu a German residence to apply for a Steuer-ID. I randomly found this on the* [*Berlin Service portal*](https://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/329216/)*”.*

**My question** is therefore if anyone has any experience of being in a similar situation or have any pointers on what I should do? I am not sure if I should..

**1)** try to obtain a tax id by filling in the form to the local Finanzamt? — I will not have a residential address in Berlin during these two months (unless I can put down a friend’s place?)

**2)** try to obtain a tax id by filling in the form 01250 mentioned above?

What confuses me is what to do for these 2 interim months, i.e. beginning my employment in Berlin but still residing and working from abroad until my relocation.

Appreciate any help!
