Doncaster Sheffield Airport to close despite financial lifeline offer

  1. Issue with this airport is that there’s several others nearby and others are cheaper even if it means driving a little further.

  2. > Peel have referred to the potential value of the site for alternative employment; many believe that will be warehousing and light industry

FFS. Surely airports are strategically important to the country and shouldn’t be gifted to private companies to run them into the ground and then sell off the land when their plan succeeds.

The same thing happened to Blackpool Airport – I think it was Balfour Beatty in that case.

Surely the state should have held the land and rented out the site to operators to avoid this kind of thing.

  3. Love the Department for Transport statement. It’s so callous and basically amounts to “oh that’s too bad. Good luck you guys!”

Wonder if the airport received EU regional development fund and replacement funding after brexit.

  4. Northern powerhouse in full effect. I guess this decision was compounded knowing that Brits will have zero purchasing power going abroad now…

  5. I wasn’t aware Doncaster-Sheffield wasn’t doing so well

Even more surprised that Teesside/Durham Tees Valley Airport (also owned by Peel) has managed to outlive it

  6. This reads like this airport is failing but omits that Peel have purposely made it fail by making airlines not want to use it due to the expense. They have used public money to build the local infrastructure and will sell off the land probably.

  7. I bet South Yorkshire folks are really enjoying the way the country has gone since their vote in 2019. I’m from Don Valley myself.

Caroline Flint, while an entrenched New Labourer did actually go out of her way to represent us and do her best for our communities. She was a major opponent to Labour’s stance on Brexit and quite vocally support the Brexit side despite being a Remainer herself, purely because that’s what her constituents voted for. She put her own beliefs aside and made a seriously strong case for something she didn’t even believe in because that’s what her constituents told her we all wanted. And we then rewarded her by handing a *massive* majority to a fucking Tory, in what is the old post-industrial coal and steel heartlands of this country, who has spent his entire term so far blaming *there being women on TV and in films* for many of our social issues, calling being transgender a “lifestyle choice”, and dog-whistling anti-semitism calling The fucking National Trust of all things fucking “Cultural Marxists” because they said Britain does actually have a bit of a past with the slave trade.

Nothing to “level up” the region, after New Labour basically rebuilt Sheffield, nothing to improve our economy or give us better jobs or improve our infrastructure, just “hey look that group over there, they hate Britain!” its a fucking joke. I cannot wrap my head around any of this. Whenever I go home you *still* can’t say a bad word about Boris or Brexit people get genuinely really angry about this shit still rather than even start to process that they’ve been had an conned.

  8. If Doncaster wants to thrive as a city then the council need to take over the airport. It provides jobs which feeds back into the local economy. A rail line linking it to the east coast main line would help but building that might be too expensive for the council to fund.
