Is peak social media behind us? Fewer Norwegian children using social media than two years ago

  1. Let’s hope so. I’m not usually an alarmist for new technology, but social media seems to make people and conversations unnecessarily stupid.

  2. Facebook is like a nightclub, all fun. But then your parents come in the door. Teenagers do not use Facebook/Instagram. Maybe 2-3 pictures and they have an account. But never post.

  3. Well, if you see all the internet heroes that fly around posting shits, i see why they don’t use it. And i support that

  4. I think its mainly because the older generation keeps coming into or staying on the platforms so the younger generations don’t find the joy in using the social mediaplatforms as much as they did, when to they have to share it with Grandma and parents.

  5. I have two thoughts on this.

Firstly is the timing of it. They compared this with use in 2020 – ie: height of pandemic where their entire lives: school, social, some familial, was all online because it needed to be. It is entirely possible that they are just tired of digital mediums of communication.

I also think the other redditor has a point with their nightclub analogy. The article also points out that while snapchat, instagram, and facebook/twitter use has dropped, tiktok and discord have risen. I think we’re just seeing the new and cool nightclubs popping up. The older generation will eventually summon enough energy to go figure those out, and when they do, those will drop as well.

Also, the generation of parents with kids from 9-11 (the group in focus), are also the generation that grew up with computers (Millennials born late 80s – mid-late 90s) who have a lot of experience with new tech, new social media, and the pitfalls of those. They have their own experiences with bullying and the like on social media, and, while not outright banning their kids from using it, showed them that it’s maybe not all its cracked up to be. I know a lot of my friends with kids have had frank and honest discussions about it with their kids.

  6. I might be wrong, but dont our eyes stop developing at around 11-12 years mark? So allowing kids on devices and sites like these actually physically harm them?

As I said, I might be wrong but I think that kids dropping social media and indirectly not spending time looking at a screen is actually good, health wise.

Also these sites dont actually nurture our brains at the age when we absorb nearly everything that we see.

  7. I do hope so. SoMe is rot for the brain really. So much “oh you need to be like this to be cool”, “do makeup like this and you will be pretty” and so on there. It’s not healthy.

  8. Social media is so draining. The modern take that everyone is/trying to become an influencer is so demoralising too. Who could be bothered
