That’s odd, it was his policy to reverse NIC rises. If your economic policy is just “not what tories do” then you have even less economic credibility than them.
He doesn’t have to and shouldn’t yet. Labour’s strategy leading up to the election should be to shut up and let the vindictive Brexiter Tories wallow in the the mess they’ve created – there will be strikes, high interest rates, high inflation, and social unrest. Labour will win a comfortable victory.
Starmer is both for and against this at the same time.
I’m convinced the tories know they’re done come the next GE and this is their way of poisoning the water for Labour. They’re doing so much damage, Labour will have no choice but to do unpopular things just to keep the UK running, let alone improving.
Enjoying all the people explaining how this is 4d chess. The man is as much a stooge as the rest of them. I just hope people wake up before more lives are ruined by Cameron 2.0, his anti-benefits shadow chancellor and his pro-NHS privatisation shadow health secretary.
Unfortunately now that its happened I’m sure the media would eviscerate him for suggesting it which is why meaningful change never happens in this country.
I’m sure there would be a mock up of him as King John in the Sun in a week.
People want a solid alternative to the Tories. Some will be OK with a Tory-lite approach and others will vote for Labour for tactical voting purposes; there is still a desire (and a need) for a true left wing party in the UK though. Maybe a Tory-lite Labour will get that ball rolling and they will move further to the left over time, however if a Tory-lite approach gets them into power then they will not be incentivised to give it up in time.
Amazing. Somehow the papers are trying to make this Starmer’s fault. JFC
To be fair I’m not keen on him recently but I feel that whatever taxation structure Labour brings in to fix this would be so radically different that there is no point in discussing these minor points
Of course they won’t, because as usual, all the opposition does is talk shit about every decision the government makes, and not come up with their own ideas – which is why they have been out of power for 12 years.
Labour likes to be passive and wait for the Tories to implode, instead of being competitive and showing leadership.
He doesn’t have to commit to anything, but constantly sitting on the fence makes him look like he has no actually values and no one really knows what it is he actually stands for other than wanting to be in power. He is going to get my vote but quite reluctantly.
What is labours alternative plan?
You can’t just be against something without an alternative.
And so begins the tory deflection. Labour didn’t introduce this shit. We shouldn’t be analysing their response or lack there of at all yet.
This is tory spin and it can fuck off.
Deflect, distract, divide. It’s their only plan to keep power, so stop buying it.
Kier would do exactly the same as them lot as they are all under the control of the WHO WEF .
all he does is sit on the fence and get payed good money. bit of a kipper two faced and no guts.
Its always on labour to reverse the terrible tax cuts making them the boogyman, right? What a system.
The article says they are against the 45% rate cut not that they are on the fence. (They’re not sure about the 20% to 19% cut)
Something tells me these media outlets like using headlines that imply Starmer is indecisive… Wonder why?
Tax levels are now at where they were for the vast majority of the last labour government.
Despite the screeching of the left somehow desperate to pay more tax, Labour won’t make many changes if they get in.
The top rate of tax should be increased to 95%. Nobody needs all those pounds once you hit those insane income levels. Tax them until they’re on their knees for the good of the country.
I don’t agree with the removal of the 45p tax rate.
I am not at all inspired by Labour saying the conference will be an opportunity to set out an alternative …. surely they should have one NOW.

Now might be a good day to learn about the [ratchet effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratchet_effect).
