Servus,

The divider in our innenhof window fell off unexpectedly last week. I took a look at it, and as best as I can tell it was glued and serves no structural purpose i.e., it appears to be only decorative.

Does anyone know their way around one of these windows? Does this element serve a structural purpose or is it just decorative? Should I hurry up and fix it?

Many thanks!

  1. I would also guess it is only decorative, but to be sure – do you own the apartment or do you rent it? If you rent it, get in touch with your landlord (or Hausverwaltung) and have them fix it, that is part of their responsibility …

  2. Well I would contact your Hausverwaltung first, or if you know the person you are renting from, you could contact them. Could be structural, could be decorative but regardless it’s broken and should be fixed in any case before you move out, if and whenever you do…

  3. Does it only look like someone took a perfectly fine regular window and put a fucking beam right in the middle?

If I were you, I’d probably remove the inner part as well. That’s just stupid design.

  4. This is only aesthetic. The glass is held in place by the bars close at the ‘edge’ of the glass. For installation, the person doing this has cut away from the ‘rubber gaskets’. I am not sure, if you can leave it like that or not. Do not worry too much about annoying the landlady. Tell them that the glue gave in and the bar fell off, so you are not sure what actions to take, since the rubber protection is missing at the bottom and rainwater/dirt could maybe cause a problem later on, etc.

Basically putting emphasis on this happening without you doing anything – it’s the glue. Also you being aware of a potential problem due to the way the element was installed. And not trying to do something (or nothing) unauthorised that could cause a problem later on.
