Budget 2023: Everything we know so far

  1. Reduction in childcare fees doesn’t seem as comprehensive as had been flagged in the last few months. Could be controversial.

  2. I’m glad to see something given back to students, they’re the (hopeful) tax payer of the future so it makes sense for us to help them along the way. They’ll be the ones generating the money that pays for our OAP benefits later

  3. > Revenue-raising measures are likely to include a new construction industry levy to part-fund the €2.7 billion mica redress scheme

This will increase prices of new builds for home buyers

  4. contantly updating editions and forcing kids to buy the newer expensive ones is the thing that should be done away with . The school expenses are the smartest idea in the budget (I don’t have kids) but I wonder will they continue buying edition 25 and then 26 and then etc new edition every year or whatever and forced to buy all new books when older second hand ones are fine .

  5. Here’s a look at the main topics on this subreddit for previous year’s budgets.

    Budget 2013

https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/14blrl/budget_live_thread/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf mostly talk around increase in student registration fees. Noticeably missing any talk around housing.

Budget 2014 back when Stephen Donnelly used to post on Reddit

And the main talk was of booze tax going up and job security

    Budget 2015

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/2j7kzw/live_budget_thread/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

    Budget 2016

https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/4fnkhh/35m_removed_from_2016_mental_health_budget/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf most posts relate to health funding which was the big talking point that year

    Budget 2017

https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/56y2qh/so_what_do_ye_make_of_budget_2017/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf First time we see home buying as a topic for discussion

    Budget 2018

https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/9nbcbt/budget_2018/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf Housing becomes top of mind.

Not arsed doing the more recent ones.

  6. FFG giving it a good shot at addressing concerns in this budget, let’s see if it pays off for them.

  7. The 40% up to 10,000 per month energy relief for businesses is huge.

People were saying the government was not doing enough to stop businesses going to the wall, but this is a great move.

I think it’s looking like a decent budget, I wish they’d done more on college fees (as education is a big part of Ireland’s success) but I guess you could say that about any part of it.

  8. The energy price cap is a big one to look at. One off payments when the companies are going to raise the prices again isn’t well thought out and gives the feeling that FFG won’t go after the source.

  9. The vacant property tax is far too low. Base rate for a house under 200k (which many of the abandoned properties in the country that need refurbishing would be under) will be €270 a year.

A 400k house empty for a year will cost the owner a whopping (/s) €1,215 base.

What’s the point? Do they expect that to encourage people to do something with it?

  10. Hi. Can someone explain how the €500 Cost of Living Disability Support Grant to be paid to all people receiving a disability payment is going to work? I’m on disability, am I entitled to this grant?

  11. Overall a good budget. I dont feel they did enough for middle income earners, would have been nice to see the threshold for the higher tax go to 50k or higher , but for once we had a budget where those who work got more than those on welfare, hopefully more of these to come.

Thankfully they didnt touch cars or booze at all, bar ending the 9% hospitality vat which is a bit shameful

  12. Does anyone know what the new income limit is for the GP cards? I can’t find it anywhere but maybe I am not searching well – all it says is number of people set to be eligible but not the max income to qualify
